Use topic as mailing list

    I have a private forum where I’d like to run some kind of mailing list in one topic (may be in a seperate forum as well). Every logged in user should be able to view the topic and subscribe to it, but only admins should be allowed to post so the mailing load can be controlled.

    My ideas:
    1) Close the topic. But it seems like subscribe-notifications are only sent when the topic is open. Is there a fix for that?
    2) Use seperate forums and the Private Groups plugin (great stuff btw!) so only few people can post in the mailing forum/topic. But it’s not possible to make the forum/topic viewable but “post-protected” for one group.

    I’m using WP 4.0.1 and bbP 2.5.4. Example forum of the site (bbP-design is to be fixed): http://tumkolleg.ovtg.de/?forum=example-forum

    im kind of leanging that you might need some custom development for this

    Thanks for the answer, Rob!

    bbPress Digest might be an solution for my aim, I’ll have a closer look at it.

    I found a small workaround (for sure not the best solution but feasible): I open the topic just before I want to post something and close it right after I’ve made the reply. So the mails are sent and subscribers nearly aren’t able to reply.

    I let you know if I could solve it more elegant

    I’m kind of thinking we should allow notifications to be sent from topics that have been closed.

    Can you create a ticket on Trac and we can make a decision and fix this, I’m unable to test and confirm this behaviour at the moment but the ticket will remind me 🙂
