Widget "Topic List" How-to display author with author link

Hey guys
I’m trying to develop a community site for TERA at http://bigassmonsters.com (demo for this thread at http://bigassmonsters.com/wp/ )
On the right-hand column I’d like to use the built-in widget feature of WP to have a widget show the last 5 topics with their title, date posted and author. The trouble I am running into is I can’t, for the life of me, figure out why the author_link won’t generate.
