That is the specific functionality I want for my forum, but can’t seem to find something that can do just that in the default theme or widgets.

Specifically, I want to show a list of most recently replied to topics and have the link to the latest topic (such as the timestamp links to on the main /forums/ page here).

Have you looked at using some shortcodes on WP pages to get what you are after?

I’m actually hoping to find the queries themselves, so I can have a little better control over layout, etc. and what’s included. I managed to find it in my theme’s search results, but ran into another issue and didn’t get a chance to dig through the theme to see what’s generating that just yet.

This was never quite answered. How is bbpress.org running a page that lists all the threads in order of freshness?
