We have been running a standalone forum using bbpress 1.02 and would very much like to upgrade it to the current version, but want it to be a standalone entity without being an add-on. Is that doable? Where can I find instructions as how to do it?

bbPress 2.0 is a WordPress plugin, which means you must have WordPress installed to use it.

Thanks for the response. We have figured that out too. That means a major restructuring of our site.
