They’re new in bbPress 2.2.
- Spectators can view the forum, but cannot contribute.
- Visitors are what you are before you become a participant. You have the same capabilities as a participant, but you haven’t participated yet.
Could probably remove/hide the Visitor role from display, since it’s not really useful for anyone to manually select it.
OK, thank JJJ (maybe is a good idea to put inside codex page) ๐
I’m also trying to get my head round the new roles… Why do visitors and participants have the same capabilities?
Spectators: can read public forums and posts, but not post.
Visitors: can post on public forums…
Surely, participants should be able to read and post on private forums?
Moderators: apart from editing others posts, they can view hidden forums?
Keymaster: full controlThanks,
Andy
Indeed… Also no way to make a pvt forum (or staff only forum) :/
Latest question, sorry…
What is: Automatically assigns the default role to new, registered users upon visiting the site?
ATM new user is set to Participant from default… What expect if i enable this? Someone can try to best explain (yes, i know, my English is really poor… i’m sorry) ๐
bbPress 2.2 roles and capabilities (according to Members plugin)
While we are waiting for the documentation, I thought this might be a handy reference:Blocked

view_trash*Please note the last role above is supposed to be “Keymaster” – I would edit my post but I don’t have the capability…
If I get a change today i’ll try to update https://codex.bbpress.org/bbpress-user-roles-and-capabilities/
That said though if anyone else wants to update it before I get a chance feel free to do so, if you have a bbpress.org username and pass you can edit the codex docs yourself. There are quite a few updates needed for 2.2 in the codex docs and any help would be greatly appreciated.
Just click ‘login’ at the top right of the page using the same bbPress username & password you use here at bbpress.org and edit away.
I totally get the reason for the ‘entry level’ that can’t do anything.
I want to run a velvet rope community for like-minded creatives (I mod such a forum on a large, commercial forum but they’re having serious, probably existential difficulties) and I want to be able to review new applicants. This seems perfect for what I want. The new user registers, I get the notice, I check him out, I upgrade him to an active role.
I did have some difficulties finding the Forum User Role edit field (in the user profile edit UI) at first but everything seems fine, now.
Things seem to be falling into place nicely, now. (Particularly since I tumbled to the GD bbPress tools. The quote plugins I’d tried previously were getting hosed in the WYSIWYG editor. )
