Spam Registrations

    Hi all,

Looking for a way to stop spam user regestrations. By default the users are “spectators” so the spam users cant do anything but is there a way to stop them outright?

I enabled reCAPTCHA for bbPress but, unless I am doing something wrong, it doesn’t seem to stop the regestrations (in fact not sure its working).

    Thanks.

I’m not sure what you mean by a ‘spam registration’ – when a user registers, how could the system know whether they were a genuine user or a spam one ??

I know they are not real users because I get 50 to 100 in one go. Its just automated spam users. They cant spam because I lock down the user access to the forums to very specific users but it still fills up my user-list. This is after Akismet/Jetpack has filtered out hundreds already.

If Captcha worked or if I had a “challenge question” I guarantee these would not get passed. So I wondered if I can set them up for user registration somehow?

Edit: Actually I activated two-factor authentication via Jetpack and that seems to have stopped the fake registrations. Though its a bit heavy handed.

Great, thank you. Getting a different error now, but will work through that – “ERROR for site owner: Invalid key type”.
