Recalculate last activity in each topic and forum

Is it possible to “Recalculate last activity in each topic and forum” in a standalone program? I’m trying to use bbp_recount_rewalk() but it doesn’t do a proper recount like it does when I do it from the WP/BB tools interface while logged in. Should I be calling a different function and/or does the function require an authenticated user login to be allowed to run properly?
My main requirement is to have the ‘freshness’ be accurate so I can run a standalone procedure called as required.
