I am using BuddyPress and would like all of my group forums to have sub-forums and only allow users to post topics into the sub-forums so that the top level forum it simply a container for the sub forums.

Is this easily doable or will I need to find someone to do some coding?

if you create your top forum as a category, then it will not have entries.

so

dashboard>forums>all forums and create or edit a forum

In the forum on the right hand side you will see the options Forum Attributes and types of forum or category
