Open Links in New Window & Target Blank

I have read through the following topics below and tried the mentioned plugins on bbpress 1.1 and none of them seem to work. It stops external links working all together.

I would like to have external links open in a new window. I have filled my domain in like in _ck_ post-20612
Is there some reason why it would not be working on a later version?
