I have a live site that I added forums to.
using WP 4.7
bbpress 2.5.12

When I try to look at a users profile from the
forum I get a 404 error.

Is there a fix for this or even a plugin?
Any ideas?

Could you try creating a new user and assign the participant role to that user then visit their profile page please.

Does that work?

Maybe also try running the “Remap existing users to default forum roles” repair tool
