I created some catagories in my bbpress forum and I tried to move a post to one of the catagories by using the drop-down menu but it did not work. The new catagories were disabled. Why?

Because “Categories are forums where new topics cannot be created. Categories usually contain a group of sub-forums.”

Just quoting the paragraph under the Category checkbox in your dashboard.

So how do I create sub-forums?

From the same page where you usually create forum. Remember to select its parent forum from the dropdown menu!
