We can insert images with [img] and an external image hosting service.

But we can’t put thumbnails in the topic or replies — we are only able to put in full images with [img]

Can we make it some way so we can insert images (that expand with lightbox, already functioning on the site outside the forums) as thumbnails and galleries?

I guess there is an option on the post edit page, right hand side, lower down, look for ‘featured image’

You may try https://imgcave.com all image types are accepted. It generates numerous codes to easily link to images.
