the amount of tags seems to be a variable that could break my theme. is there anyway of limiting the number of tags allowed per topic.

EDIT: the search engine doesn’t really use the tags for searching right? so what exactly is the point of tags? plus doesnt it break SEO as google is cracking down on word-populating-pages?

Not that I know of. Probably best to make your design flexible enough to handle it : )

Google is smart enough to pick a legitimate usage of tags type pages from an illegitimate one.
