Is there a plugin to achieve the type of filtering offered on pinside.com (click on forum page)? Rebuilding a forum and would like to have the homepage/forum basically be an activity feed of topics that show all stuff in the order of newness but you can uncheck forums to drill down. Or maybe play with some other ideas but starting with a basis like that website?

You would probably need to look for a theme that does this, not a plugin. I don’t know much about themes for this, but that’s the way to go according to me.
