I’d like my clients to log in first before seeing anything, and have made all forums hidden. For some reason General is still showing though, but when I click it it goes to a 404. General is the only forum section with subsections.

You could use https://da.wordpress.org/plugins/bbp-private-groups/ for this functionality.
