Is is possible to display the word “forum” if the page is a forum, or the word “Topic” if it is a post etc? At the moment, my header displays the forum title and thread title, but it doesn’t say if it is a forum or post.

that does make sense, but I’m afraid its theme related, so you would need to raise with your theme provider
