I have a category with a community forum where local events can be posted.

Is there a way that I can view/moderate posts just for that forum before displaying them?

I think you should create a plugin to do it for you. It may be not that hard to do

I wanted bbPress moderation, so just hacked up an ugly set of filters to mark new topics/replies as pending rather than published.

It may be sufficient for your needs.
