As @xmasons mentioned above you could use the plugin
https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bbpress-unread-posts/
for that purpose.
YOu can set the background image for the unread posts and put there an icon.
Do you have CSS knowledge?

@pantheism: you need to go to your file located at:

http://pantheismnow.org/wp-content/plugins/bbpress/templates/default/css/bbpress.css?ver=2.2.4

And after that change the line 28:

background-color: #FBFBFB;

to whatever you want for the background color.

Have you worked with CSS before?

You can change the font family at line 14 located in the file:
http://pantheismnow.org/wp-content/themes/autumn-almanac/style.css

You are using “Trebuchet MS” for the moment.

I really would love this, can the developer please add support for bbPress?
