Make @mention also show nicename/nickname

My users are confused by @mentions when trying to follow a conversation because many users are using nicenames/nicknames, which are displayed in the forums.
Can someone point me to the function that handles @mention linking so that I can modify the @mention to include the nickname in parentheses next to it?
