Allow users to post comments without logging in.

I don’t want to have the hurdle of requiring my users to have to sign-up for a forum account.

Is it possible to allow users post comments to my forum without having to create an account (while at the same time preventing spam).

I haven’t tested this, but this plugin was just posted recently:

    Thanks for the link.

Looks like this doesn’t work with bbPress v1.0.2 per a comment on the plug-in page by a user named “hpguru”.

I’d try it out and see… it could have been a plugin conflict unique to that user!

This looks really great. Example seen here:

I’m curious to know how he prevents spam though.

All comments should run through Akismet, as long as it’s active… it’s probably similar to how WordPress filters spam, which is to say it’s pretty good but not perfect.

What do you mean when you say

“as long as it’s active” ?

Are you implying that Akismet might go offline soon?

Sorry for the confusion – I just meant that Akismet is a plugin, so as long as the plugin is activated… it should do a decent job of filtering spam.

I dunno if the Human Test plugin works well with “login free posting”, but it has an option to add a math problem to the topic/post posting form:

I just installed the Login Free Posting plug-in on my v1.0.2 bbpress forum and it works without problems if you’re not logged in but it doesn’t work if you are logged in.

If you are not already logged in, it works as expected displaying a “name”, “email”, “website” and “comment” fields for a user to post a comment without having to log in.

However, if you are logged in – it still displays all 4 fields (when it seems like the only field it should really display is the “comment”) and you CANNOT post.

You receive the following error after you click “submit” comment button (when logged in):

Error is “Your attempt to submit this post has failed.”

Sounds like it might need some tweaks to work properly… that’s too bad, it’s the closest plugin to serving your needs that I know of. It takes advantage of the new meta tables in 1.0+…

Your best bet would probably be asking the plugin developer for help… or hiring a custom developer to help you debug the existing plug!

    Thanks for the help.

I definitely like the potential of this plugin.

The whole idea is that it helps lower the barrier of user interaction on the forums.

    Thanks again.

P.S. – I posted a comment on the developer of the plug-in personal forum site: http://www.ilfilosofo.com/forum/topic/bbpress-login-free-posting-doesnt-work-if-you-are-logged-in

The login-free posting plugin is under development, and I didn’t mean for it to be showing up in the plugin browser. Sorry for the confusion.

I hope to release a working version soon.

I’m just running everything through Akismet, which seems to work well.

I am also eagerly waiting in line for the official release of this plugin!
