Site broken after update to v2.6.14
-
My forum at https://signalbox.org/the-blower/ is broken after the update to v2.6.14 – I cannot tell if the cause is BBPress itself or one of the various plugins I use.
The error message can be seen by viewing any post.
Any help appreciated.

There should be an email sent to the email address in :
dashboard>settings>general>Administration Email Address
in that email it will give you the exact error, which is the detail we need to help
Thanks for the quick reply, Robin.
I monitor that address regularly and no emails have been received. Do I need to turn anything on for that?
John
ok, you should be seeing these.
so to see the error, use the following plugin
you should also check that your site is sending emails ok, I use the following plugin
Thanks, I am on the case but have to go out for a while.
John
OK . . . I have had the debugging running and it throws a lot of errors relating to the theme but nothing obvious for the forum. The email tracking has produced no results to date.
With more research the issue seems to have been caused by the BBP Private Groups plugin, which I had disabled as I no longer wish to use it. I re-enabled it and everything then displayed correctly, I disabled it again and everything still seems to work correctly but the plugin seems to still be active!
Therefore it would seem the problem related to that plugin not disabling as it should the first time, and not specifically the BBP upgrade.
I have left the debugging active at the moment, but would like to remove it soon as it is a bit unsightly for users.
Best regards,
John
ok, if the private groups plugin is not showing as active in
dashboaard>plugins
then it is not active.
Deactivating/reactivating a plugin may have fixed an issue
The 3 you have left are because these plugins need the authors to fix the issue, or if you are not at latest versions, you to update them.

constructionsThese errors will not cause your site to fail but will do in some later version of WordPress : WordPress will eventually chnage these form a ‘Notice’ error to a ‘Critial’ error, but that may be years away (or next week!)
If everything else is working, then I’d suggest you just switch off the error display, and enjoy your site
Thanks once again for your quick response.
Yes, am happy with most of what you say but somehow the “bbP private groups” plugin does seem to be in some form of limbo. It currently shows “bbP private groups” as disabled on the Plugins page but it is definitely still active. Registered members on the Forum can still see the “Contact” Link below people’s Avatars and I have just tested using a identity I use for testing and have successfully sent a PM to myself as Administrator – this instantly showed “You have 1 message unread” on my Administrator identity and clicking on the link has taken me to the message and all previous messages, just as it always has. So everything seems to still be there despite the pligin showing itaself as disabled (i.e. it shows links for Activate and Delete).
I need to find a way to properly disable/remove this plugin – one option open to me is to delete the plugin but I fear doing that could make things worse.
Any suggestions welcome.
John
Registered members on the Forum can still see the “Contact” Link below people’s Avatars and I have just tested using a identity I use for testing and have successfully sent a PM to myself as Administrator – this instantly showed “You have 1 message unread” on my Administrator identity and clicking on the link has taken me to the message and all previous messages, just as it always has.
That is not from the private groups plugin That plugin has nothing to do with messaging.
If you care to list the ‘forum type’ plugins you are using, then I might be able to say which is doing this.
Doh! Lawdy me, how stupid can I be? Deepest apologies.
I do want to retain the private groups, so please forget that side of things.
It is “Front End PM” that I want to remove, and disabling that has re-introduced the fatal error on the forum pages.
The debugging reports:
Fatal error: Uncaught Error: Call to undefined function fep_current_user_can() in /home/signalbo/public_html/wp-content/plugins/code-snippets/php/snippet-ops.php(584) : eval()’d code:5 Stack trace: #0 /home/signalbo/public_html/wp-includes/class-wp-hook.php(324): {closure}(”) #1 /home/signalbo/public_html/wp-includes/class-wp-hook.php(348): WP_Hook->apply_filters(NULL, Array) #2 /home/signalbo/public_html/wp-includes/plugin.php(517): WP_Hook->do_action(Array) #3 /home/signalbo/public_html/wp-content/plugins/bbpress/templates/default/bbpress/loop-single-reply.php(56): do_action(‘bbp_theme_after…’) #4 /home/signalbo/public_html/wp-includes/template.php(812): require(‘/home/signalbo/…’) #5 /home/signalbo/public_html/wp-content/plugins/bbpress/includes/core/template-functions.php(103): load_template(‘/home/signalbo/…’, false) #6 /home/signalbo/public_html/wp-content/plugins/bbpress/includes/core/template-functions.php(41): bbp_locate_template(Array, true, false) #7 /home/signalbo/public_html/wp-content/plugins/bbpress/ in /home/signalbo/public_html/wp-content/plugins/code-snippets/php/snippet-ops.php(584) : eval()’d code on line 5
so I understand from that the error lies with the code-snippets plugin although as yet I’m not quite sure where to start on that. I’ll give it some thought but if you have any suggestions they wuld be appreciated.
John
OK, have rumbled it rather quicker than expected. There is a code snippet to place the “Contact” link in the forum – I tried deactivating it but could not. After several activations and deactivations of “Front End PM” it seems to have turned that off for me and all seems to be working now as it should.
Fingers crossed . . .
John
PS – and thanks for being so patient with me, and forgive me also for initially blaming the upgrade.
great – glad you are fixed, and no problem re your lack of knowledge, I suspect your knowledge of WordPress is much greater than my knowledge of railway signaling 🙂
