The javascript just modifies the link target attribute to target="_blank". Your underlying html looks the same. The javascript executes after everything is loaded and operates on the "DOM".

The nice thing is that it will find links generated by other javascripts and fix those, too. This would include the many javascript widgets that people like to put on their pages.
