Also, when I took the <a href="http://www." rel="nofollow">www.</a> off my URLs in config.php (like in my wp-config) some of the problems cleared up. I tried to install bbSync at this point and completely whacked everything. Then I finally read tbronson's post above and started over. I can work in bbPress after logging in through WP, and there have been subscribers through bbPress who have posted topics and also show up fine in WP.
