what should my admin area look like? I have no functions as an administrator, but it shows i am under this address:

Depends on what version you installed. This is from the alpha versions:
http://chrishajer.com/bbpress/admin-dashboard.pngIt sounds like when you log in, you're not a keymaster, so you're not seeing the keymaster (admin) functions.
