I am creating a family forum and I would like to control who is able to sign up. I already have it restricted to members only, but I would also like to restrict signups, if possible. So far, I’ve just been deleting the spam signups, but is there a better way?

You can use a plugin like new users approve to approve of registrations before they can actually do something on the site. There are more options, just try a few and decide which works for you.
