That's a really good point. I've been using subversion so long I forgot they packaged up the alpha release and released it on the download page. In that case, I have no idea how to tell the revision, other than going through files and comparing them the specific revisions in the repository.

For this specific problem, though, you need r1649 which includes the change that Sam says fixed this problem. The bb-admin/admin-functions.php file in the archive you downloaded and the latest alpha are different. If you're feeling adventurous, you might want to download a later alpha version and see if it fixes this plugin problem for you.

These alpha version should not be used on a production site, FYI.

Thanks for the message, Chris. I downloaded the file from the Download page here 2 days ago.

Unfortunately, a search here, nor FAQ, nor google search, nor lookup of the readme file in the install led me to the answer of how to retrieve this mysterious 'revision number'! Any chance we can get a modification of the 'Version number' sticky to include that info?

Thanks!

What revision of Alpha did you install? Looks like ticket 924 took care of the problem in revision 1649. The latest 1.0 alpha is r1755, which includes that change.

Problem is verbatim to what that poster experienced though I'm confused as to whether it was actually resolved.

I am using Alpha Unstable 1.0. Maybe I need to go down to the last stable version (or maybe Alpha 1 will become stable this week?!).

I changed

define( 'BBPATH', dirname(__FILE__) . '/' );

with this:

define( 'BBPATH', str_replace('\\', '/', realpath(dirname(__FILE__))) . '/' );

in bb-load.php, and now it works on localhost with windows xp sp2.

davetropeano's fix worked, although I had to dig a little to find out exactly what he was referring to.
You dont want to create a field but rather a row in the "bb_topicmeta" table.
I was able to check a working bbpress installation on Linux to verify the setting. I noticed that the bb_active_theme was set to use the full server path to the template folder. The below did the trick for me.

meta_id = next available number
topic_id = 0
meta_key = bb_active_theme
meta_value = /bbpress-path/bb-templates/theme-to-use/

Save that, cross your fingers and refresh your forum.

I recently did my first bbpress install on localhost and it went miserably. I used the latest download from today.

Checking on this forum I had the same path seperator issues and stylesheet issues others had, etc.

My $bb->domain and $bb->path were fine. The fresh install just didn't work properly under xampp and then again a retry on easyPHP.

This is the solution and findings I found:

1. The first issue is because in config.php and bb-load.php dirname(__FILE__) is used to get the base path for BBPATH. This is not a good thing on localhost Windows based installs.

2. There are a number of attempted workarounds to this that I've read about in this forum. All of them that I saw didn't work. Focusing on the issue with the stylesheet href not being correct I noticed that there was logic in the bb_get_active_theme_folder() function.

By default, the installer does NOT create an option entry 'bb_active_theme' in the database table topicmeta. The code logic doesn't make the correct uri.

To fix this, do an install and then add a database field bb_active_theme in the topicmeta table.

For example, I set mine to:
http://localhost/dev/bbpress/

Playing regular expression games to change x:\ and \ in general is not worth it. This seemed to be simple and worked right out of the box.

0. XAMPPlite installation on a USB thumbdrive
with 'Wordpress', 'Mediawiki', 'Vanilla', Gallery2' running smoothly
1. BBPress install complete
2. See forum page, login
3. Write a post, click 'send post'
4. Get a 'page isn't redirecting properly .... maybe cookie warning'
5. On Forum main page the post is visible, a click brings above warning
6. Check again config. php $bb-> path = '/'; and 'settings. php'; can't find the wrong reference 'X:/htdocs/bbpress/' I entered in 1st install page (and changed in config. php to '/'.
7. Can someone point out the file to change?
Thanks for your help

Detailed log of events below
0. XAMPPlite installation on a USB thumbdrive
with 'Wordpress', 'Mediawiki', 'Vanilla', Gallery2' running smoothly
1. Extracted bbpress into htdocs directory
2. Changed bbpress config.php (see below)
3. Started install and went throught step 1 (see below), step 2 (got password) and
4. Came to the site 'knowledgeflowsaround.us/forum (typing: 'http://localhost/bbpress/')
(strangely ugly, so apparently theme did not load, somewhere I set a wrong path?)
5. Tried to login: Access forbidden!
=>You don't have permission to access the requested object.
It is either read-protected or not readable by the server.
6. Clicked on any other link on the forum page and got the same result
7. Checked config file of 'Vanilla' ('settings.php') there the same parameter worked (irrelevant as Vanilla is Vanilla and bbpress/bbpress)
=>Note: Write protection can not be the problem as it is XAMPPlite on a PC so nothing is protected
8. Changed config.php $bb->path ='/'; and now I can see my forum
9. Login, okay
10. Go to 'Topic - ADD NEW' and write a new topic, click 'Send Post' and get
11. 'The page isn't redirecting properly' This problem can sometimes be caused by disabling or refusing to accept cookies'
12. Start the never used IE and with 'localhost/bbpress' go to the forum. click on any link and get (after long wait) nothing
13. In Firefox try other links it all goes to the same 'the page isn't redirecting properly (cookies are enabled)
=> So I think in 1step install the 'Location: X:\htdocs\bbpress' has to be changed but in what file?
14. Check 'settings.php and register.php' but the wrong string 'X:/htdocs/bbpress/' from below is not found.
15. Do you have an answer?

bbpress config file
// define('BBDB_NAME', 'bbpress');
// define('BBDB_USER', 'root');
// define('BBDB_PASSWORD', 'password');
// define('BBDB_HOST', 'localhost');

// $bb->domain = 'http://localhost/bbpress';
// $bb->path = 'X:/htdocs/bbpress/'; (=> changed to '/'; and could access forum, add a post, but can't see)

// $bb->name = 'knowledgeflowsaround.us/forum';

1step install
login name: admin
website: http://localhost/bbpress/
