I just installed bb press at dailytestimony.net/forums with the latest stable version of WPMU in the root directory. When I goto a page such as dailytestimony.net/forums/profile/user I get the main blogs 404 error page. Do I need something in a .htaccess file or something?

EDIT: I get it with trying to view forums too, I am using name based permalinks.

EDIT2: Ok it seems the answer is simple I just needed to RTD (Read The Documentation), Options +MultiViews
<rant>IDK why they just couldn't distribute a .htaccess file with that line with bbpress. Save people the trouble because they mention it in the documentation here but at the verry least it should like to the documentation where you set permalink options. </rant>

Actually, the bbPress secret can live in the database. But you are right that the WPMU one cannot, mostly for login compatibility between blogs within WPMU.

Obviously you should choose your own secret and salt values, not the one's given above.

i just solved my login cookie issue after one night debugging...
i found these things:
- by default, wpmu generate auth_cookie as "wordpress", but bbpress generate as "wordpress_xxxxx(hash)"

- wpmu not using "database secret" for cookie hashing, but it use the SECRET_SALT constant defined in the wp-config.php, bbpress using "database secret". so the cookie result will never be the same.

you need to update your bb-config.php file to meet these situations.
assumed you've successfully install wpmu + bbpress, then edit your bb-config.php and add these line:

define('BB_SECRET_KEY', 'yourreallysecretkey');
define('BB_SECRET_SALT', 'yourreallysecretsalt');

$bb->authcookie = 'wordpress';
$bb->cookiedomain = '.yourdomain.com';
$bb->cookiepath = '/';
$bb->sitecookiepath = '';

and try to login... voila.. you can switch to bbpress and wpmu without re-login... :)

good luck,

I managed to fix this in the end... italways' post got me thinking, as he mentioned problems on sub-domains. Despite my BB press directory not being in a sub-domain, looking at the MU forum, a lot of people seemed to be having problems with the 1.5.1 install switching sub-domains with sub-directories. Looking at the forums here again, there was a topic about integrating BB Press with MU on a sub-domain which included adding the following code to bb-config:

require_once('/home/mydomain/public_html/wp-blog-header.php');

This is the relative path from the server root. Adding this seemed to fix the cookie problem and BB Press 0.9.0.2 is now successfully sharing cookies with MU 1.5.1 for me. This is the only change from the standard integration settings. I was trying all sorts before trying that, with absolutely no joy. Quite why this worked, I don't know... hope it works for you too.

WPMU is adding some extra information to the end of wordpress' username cookie content.

For example, the old cookie content is simply "admin," while the new cookie is "admin" + a number like "%7C1211540101%7Cb954a41e23200ea6951bdeb405dc5237."

Perhaps this is some kind of hash? I know WPMU 1.5.1 added a salt key to the wp-config.php file, so maybe that has something to do with it.

I just upgraded my site to mu1.5.1 and bbpress to the latest release and now cookies wont work. I've tried everything, all the ways listed here and on other sites and no luck.

Its probably because wp2.5 changed cookie styles so the old way doesnt work anymore. I know because I tried my old config and it didnt do anything.

That's interesting... glad you got it sorted. I'm still having problems despite being in a sub-folder... I've tried countless variations in my config files, but I'm still in cookie hell.

WPMU 1.5.1 install is (www.mainsite.com)
BB Press 0.9.2 is (www.mainsite.com/forum/)

This is what you meant by sub-folder isn't it?

I've just left it for the time being in the hopes that someone will post that they had the same problem but that they've solved it. Lazy, I know, but I ended up dreaming of config files the other night. I'm actually feeling pretty numb about the whole thing now... I've managed to integrate before with previous versions of MU and BB, but I just can't fathom this one. Your post (and the absence of others with problems) leads me to believe that this is a problem of my own making.

I've been following the development of MU 1.5.1 (seems pretty nifty so far) and from the looks of things, it's now locked as an official release to download on the main site.

I haven't however, been able to integrate it successfully with BB Press yet, despite applying the usual checklist and a few things besides. I haven't had much of a problem with previous versions of Wordpress, MU and BB Press, although I fully understand that MU 1.5.1 is hot off the press as it were.

If anyone manages to successfully integrate or knows whether this is currently possible (with 0.9 or above), please would you post your solution... it'd be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Clarification - when bbadmin tries to login after integration, the response is that bbadmin does not exist. I think this is because bbadmin credentials created by the bbPress installation are not stored in the WPMU users table. Of course, it wouldn't exist. But bbPress doesn't copy over those credentials or look at both tables to authenticate.

I'm using bbPress 0.902 and WPMU 1.3.3. Integrating the bbPress with the user database works, but then I can't access the bbPress admin console anymore. Here's what happens:

1. install bbPress without integration and in the process create an admin account bbadmin.
2. The bbadmin account works, I can access the bbPress admin screens, etc.
3. Change the integration settings to point to the WPMU users table. I do NOT do the cookie integration as this is problematic with the new password hashing.
4. bbPress immediately logs bbadmin out. I can login with WPMU user accounts, but none of them can access the bbPress admin console. More importantly, the bbadmin account can't login anymore.

I've replicated this problem 7 times.

The bottom line is that I can't use the db integration feature at all.

Question - how can I integrate the WPMU users and still access the bbPress admin console?

since this is about WPMU, I guess I don't need to open a new thread. We have common problems.

To get you secret key: go to http://yourdomain.com/wp-admin/options.php
It lists out your option and your SECRET_KEY is a long alphanumeric character in front of the key 'entry'.

For the second secret (I've forgotten which is which), just define one in the wp-config.php of your installation.

I've not checked user-integration on my side by downgrading bbpress sounds like a pain.

Now, to my own problem;
I just installed bbpress on my new WPMU based website. I used the automated wordpress registration.
Everything is working fine but I've got two concerns:

1. I got this error on installation: Duplicate key name 'user_nicename'
>>> User tables will already exist when performing a database integrated installation.

It looks pretty harmless, but I want reassurrance that it will not be harmful in the future.

2. The only pretty permalink feature working is the default forum.php?id=1. The others give 404 errors.
Any idea what I might do?

I would go back to the 0.8.3.1 release myself until Donncha releases the upgrade to WPMU. You can find the older release of bbpress at:

http://trac.bbpress.org/browser/branches/0.8

That or you have to work on the plugin to get the old md5 hashes working again. It might be easier on your users to just get the older version running again though :)

I'm using WPMU 1.3.1 and the latest version of bbPress. There is no SECRET_KEY in the config file for WPMU and I don't think WPMU 1.3.1 uses the latest WP cookie encryption of WP2.5. I've tried mouldy cookies plugin and I can't get it to work. I've got the usernames integrated with the blog, but I can't pass login credentials (cookies) between WPMU and bbPress.

Any suggestions?
