Thanks. I do need integration.

I may set up a dev.domain.com area and get things up and running first. I have never done this but it would seem to be the safest path.

Option 1 is valid. When bbPress comes out later though, WordPress might be higher than 2.6. There might always be a little bit of lag between versions for compatibility, but the idea is sane: upgrade now, then wait for a new version and upgrade again later.

Option 2 is also valid.

Question 1: yes, you can grab any old release from WordPress.org:
http://wordpress.org/download/release-archive/

Also, you need only worry about compatibility if you are looking for integration. Other than that, the versions don't need to be sync'd up.

And finally, you need to be careful running old versions to be certain there were no security fixes. The move from 2.6 to 2.6.1 had nothing to do with security, but the move from 2.5 to 2.6 did. So I guess 2.5 had some security issues. [citation needed]

I am currently running the following:

WP 2.3x (using due to theme limitations)
BBPress 0.8.3.1

I am planning to upgrade the theme to be compatible with the latest version of Wordpress. Once I do this I need to upgrade BBpress. Given the availabiltiy of the Alpha and the 2.5 restriction of BBpress 0.9 I was looking for suggestions on how to go about things.

Option 1 - Is this a valid path?

1. Upgrade to WP2.5 & BBpress 0.9
2. Wait for stable 1.0 Beta of BBpress
3. Upgrade to WP 2.6x and BBpress 1.0

Option 2
1. Upgrade to WP2.6 & BBpress Alpha

Questions:
1. Is a 2.5 version of WP still being distributed?

I hope this was clear. Thanks.

Yes - to upgrade, just remove the old files, saving any you've added or modified (bb-config.php, my-templates and my-plugins, at least) then install the new version. Then, you normally access a URL like http://www.example.com/bbpress/bb-admin/upgrade.php which takes care of the database changes.

Always back everything up first (both filesystem and database) so you can go back if something goes wrong.

Thanks Chris, I have filed a ticket on another issue I found, and I will file a ticket for this. But I'm more curious to find out if I'm really the only one seeing this issue. It seems like a pretty obvious issue, so I'm surprised no one else has noticed it... which leads me to believe that I must have done something wrong.

As a developer, I hate when people file bugs before looking for a minimal reproduce case... and so I was just trying to ask if someone else has seen this before I file a bug ticket.

Ok, more of a clue here...

It looks like the insert into term_taxonomy is failing during the upgrade process.

it appears as if, bb_term_taxonomy has a 'description' field which is NOT NULL in the schema:

// term_taxonomy
$bb_queries['term_taxonomy'] = "CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS $bbdb->term_taxonomy (
	term_taxonomy_id bigint(20) NOT NULL auto_increment,
	term_id bigint(20) NOT NULL default 0,
	taxonomy varchar(32) NOT NULL default '',
	description longtext NOT NULL,
	parent bigint(20) NOT NULL default 0,
	count bigint(20) NOT NULL default 0,
	PRIMARY KEY (term_taxonomy_id),
	UNIQUE KEY term_id_taxonomy (term_id, taxonomy)
);";

but the upgrade code...

$bbdb->insert( $bbdb->term_taxonomy, array(
				'term_id' => $term_id,
				'taxonomy' => 'bb_topic_tag'
			) );

does not set a description, so this insert is failing.

Not sure how this could be working for anyone else...

Am I really the only one seeing this?

Are tags expected to be working on the 1.0 alpha code?

I am playing around with the system, and it it appears as if tags are not being displayed. the bb_tag_heat_map() is displaying nothing, bb_get_top_tags() is returning an empty array. Individual posts don't show tags either.

I am assuming this is related to the new taxonomy code... not sure if I did the upgrade incorrectly or what. When I logged into the admin system the first time, it did do a DB upgrade.

I've recently upgraded my WP to 2.5.1, and the integration with BBpress 0.8.2 (via bbPress Integration 0.74 by Michael Adams) has broken the login on the BBpress side for the admin/keymaster account. It doesn't help that my server won't send emails, so I can't set the password because I never get the registration email (weirdly it never change the WordPress admin login. Should it?).

Anyway, my question is this - how can I manually reset the password for the admin account, or re-create the link between admin (WP) and keymaster (bb)? Is it possible, without going through the link that auto-generates a password?

Also, if I de-activate the integration plugin (on WP and bb) and upgrade bbPress to 0.9.0.2, can I force a new password for the bb keymaster account? There doesn't seem to be a table for bb_users, and I don't want to mess with the WP admin account.

Without a keymaster account, can I even upgrade?

Thanks,

If you are installing fresh, sure, just delete those. If you want, you can change the table prefix in your new bbpress installation. I forget where it is in the installation procedure, but maybe it's under an option called "advanced database settings" or something? I think it was hidden unless you reveal it by clicking.

If bbPress finds the bb_ tables there already, I suspect it might just try to upgrade the database. That's probably OK, but if you don't need the old bbPress installation, I would just start from scratch with new tables.

Ah brilliant,

Thanks so much for the clarification. I was getting the feeling that quite a few things had changed all right. The main development site has had quite a lot of work done so far, but on bbpress all I had really done was set it to use the header and footer from the WP theme.

It'll be easy to dump it and start again.

Actually on that point. In installing the old version I stored the bb_press database tables in this site's WordPress database, eg:

bb_forums
bb_posts
bb_tagged
bb_tags
bb_topicmeta
bb_topics
wp_comments
wp_ig_caticons
wp_links
wp_options
wp_postmeta
wp_posts
wp_term_relationships
wp_term_taxonomy
wp_terms
wp_usermeta
wp_users

Should I delete each of the tables prefixed "bb_" before continuing?

Cheers,

Alex

I would install bbPress latest which is 0.9.0.2 and WordPress latest which is 2.5.1. The big change with WordPress 2.5.* and bbpress 0.9.* was with the cookies. If you have only a few test posts, I would just install WordPress fresh (or upgrade your WordPress installation) then install bbPress fresh. Integration is totally different now, no more plugins.

Good luck.

Hi there,

I started development on a wordpress + bbpress site quite a while back. Development stalled and I'm only coming back to it now.

I had integrated wp + bbp fairly successfully but I have a feeling upgrading to WP2.5.1 might have broken a lot of that cross compatibility.

The bbpress installed version is 0.8.3.1, but essentially it's an empty forum (a couple of test posts from myself).

Regarding upgrading to the latest version, I get a feeling I might almost be better off completely wiping the original forum version and starting again - I might run into less problems? I had a look through the trac but couldn't really work out how much substantial change there has been between current and my older version.

Any suggestions?

Is uninstalling and reinstalling reasonably easy?

Whew. Found the problem and more importantly, the solution, here:

Should have searched a little more before getting panicky.

I upgraded bbpress after upgrading my wordpress site to the latest version (2.5.1). The install complained that there were already forums/threads in the database, but said the install went OK. The problem I'm having, however, is that when I go to the forums, I get a t_string error referring to line 20 of the bb_config.php file.

This line is the prefix used for the tables.
$bb_table_prefix = 'bb_'; // Only letters, numbers and underscores please!

So, I'm guessing that it thinks it is a new install instead of merely an upgrade. How do I get the updated version to simply read in the existing forums and threads?

Thank you so much for any help. These are busy forums and there will be limited patience with this problem. :/

I wrote my own replacement plugin for the mail function that uses the Swift Mailer PHP class to call sendmail directly, which should provide better performance over the built-in php mail functions.

It also gives the the chance to assign a display name to the email address so it comes through as "bbPress Support Forum" instead of just "forum@bbpress.org".

if ( !function_exists('bb_mail') ) {
function bb_mail($to, $subject, $content, $headers=''){

        require_once('PATH_TO/Swift/lib/Swift.php');
        require_once('PATH_TO/Swift/lib/Swift/Connection/Sendmail.php');

        $swift =& new Swift(new Swift_Connection_Sendmail("/usr/sbin/sendmail -bs"));
        $from = new Swift_Address("noreply@mysite.com","My bbPress Forums");

        $message =& new Swift_Message($subject, $content);
        if ($swift->send($message, $to, $from)) {return true;}
        else{ echo "Message failed to send to ".$to." from ".$from;}
        $swift->disconnect();
   }
}

To use this, you'd have to download Swift from their site and put it where it's included in the above code.
http://www.swiftmailer.org/

You could also modify it to connect to an external SMTP server (even the Gmail server, for instance) by changing the Swift_Connection part above using this guide:
http://www.swiftmailer.org/wikidocs/v3/connections/smtp

bbPress 0.9 renamed the critical system email address that several plugins rely on ("admin_email" became "from_email")

Unfortunately many plugin authors aren't aware of this and the old setting is completely deleted from the database, which makes any older plugin that looks for "admin_email" fail and get a blank address and don't anticipate/test for a blank. So they blindly insert the blank address into emails which causes the emailer to either fail or bounce the message.

A few of my plugins were affected, I just found another tonight, and there are several third-party ones still unpatched.

You can work around this problem by putting this into your
bb-config.php
(anywhere on a new line)

$bb->admin_email = 'email@your-forum.com';

where
email@your-forum.com
is the same email address you use inside bbPress on
bb-admin/options-general.php

This won't hurt anything, causes no extra load of any kind and simply allows older plugins to work without additional edits until the authors get a chance to upgrade them.

(Just remember you "hard coded" this address if you ever change the main one for any reason. You can delete it after 1.0 is out and all plugins have upgraded. In fact the old email address will become unused after all the plugin upgrade anyway so this can't hurt anything in practice.)
