The spaces probably activated my raticular activating system and impulsed me to write this topic

I say "why restrict the characters in the login?" I would vote to leave them in. Most people won't use them, especially if they've been around for a while and are used to no spaces in usernames. But why arbitrarily limit the characters in the username?

Just for information and perhaps integrity debates, I would like to tell you all that I currently only allow registration from WordPress.

I noticed a few messages about usernames with spaces and have found that WordPress allows registration with usernames with spaces, and bbPress does allow login with the same.

However, I have found that the general normal condition on the Net is that usernames do not have spaces.

This could be seen as a great advantage of WordPress and bbPress or it could disturb the status quo.

Everyone's feedback would be appreciated.

There is no language file for that text, it's in your template file: /bb-templates/kakumei/post-form.php line 15 by default. You can change it there.

Where is the language file for "Enter a few words (called tags) separated by spaces to help someone find your topic: "?

I need to change spaces to commas. Also, I think this needs to be updated in the new bbpress, but the default setting I got was separated by commas, but spaces is misleading to those who post.

And it seems to work. Does not allow for special characters, for example, Dr. Nobody (the period doesn't go through)...

One step closer, now... Thanks for all the help.

That was a good lead, but I downloaded the plugin, and although it shows up (unlike the display-name plugin) activating it has no impact on old registrations.

I also tried to register a new account "Test User" -- the confirmation screen says, "Your registration as TestUser was successful." No space.

Although in a wacky twist of fate, the registration did also carry through to WP. And assigned the correct role once the user logged in, albeit with a changed username as indicated above.

OK, I got the bb running, seeing the usernames from wp.

Two issues, first, I installed the bb plugin mentioned in the faq (name-display) into the my-plugins sub-directory. It doesn't show up in the plugins section of bb.

Which makes me wonder if that is the reason users who register on BB are not found on WP. If this is the case, figuring out how to get the plugin active will solve the problem... If it isn't, any ideas why wp isn't recognizing bb registrations?

Second, I noticed that WP usernames with a space (Joe West) can not log in to bb with that name, but usenames without spaces (Joe) work fine.

Since this bb install is later than my wp install, I have users who have spaces in their names... Any way to fix this?

I also have a idea why *every* user put tags space separated.
I my theme, there is a sentence just before the tag text field that tells users to put spaces ...:

<label for="tags-input"><?php printf(__('Enter a few words (called <a href="%s">tags</a>) separated by spaces to help someone find your topic:'), get_tag_page_link()) ?>

And I think that in the original kakumei...
and my translation (in french) also ask user for space separated tags.

to, you can have a "social" bug-fix of this problem : change the cited line in your theme (file = post-form.php). That "social engineering" !

It's not off topic at all to talk about WordPress. I'm saying that the development of the two products is very much done in parallel, so if a decision is made about how tags should be inputed in WordPress (which is likely at this stage as tags are in development in WP), then that will likely affect the bbPress implementation. Perhaps you will get a better answer asking on the developers mailing list or by submitting a bug report on the Trac site.

I updated to .8.2.1 and this issue isn't resolved; in fact, it's worse. I re-hacked the line to read

$words = explode(' ', $tags);

It no longer strips out commas. So a user entering this for tags in a new post:

I like the commas because some tags require more than one word and commas allow us to do that. Having spaces as the seperator makes it impossible without having to add a dash or something else to create multiple word tags. I was onboard with the commas to seperate before and still +1 on the issue now.
