Actually... i fixed this by installing _ck_'s year long cookie plugin.

I actually didn't have it installed before (And never did) BUT... decided to give it a shot and it worked!

Chris, thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

According to the text in this plugin's comments, the "remember me" is supposed to change the cookie expiration to 2 weeks out. Does that happen to the cookie when you check the box?

Can you log in with one user, then check the cookie dates, close the browser, log in again, check the "remember me" and check the cookie dates? I have no idea how the function works, but maybe it just extends the expiration date of the cookie?

If that doesn't appear any different, maybe posting the entirety of the cookies, with the box checked and without, would help someone troubleshoot it.

Hi All,

I recently upgraded to 0.9.0.2 and since this upgrade the "remember me" functionality we used to have is now not working at all.

Basically if you close the browser down completely, and reopen it, then access the site you have to login Each time.

Any ideas?? i tried switching to default themes, etc and it made no difference.

Also, i should add that i have no Wordpress integration at all, its a pure bbpress site.

To have access to bbPress functions from WordPress, you need to include bbPress inside WordPress. Then you can put that link wherever you want using bbPress functions. Read here:

http://www.adityanaik.com/integratepress-part-i/

Find bb-load.php in that page.

You'll need to use the PHP functions to check the cookies... bbpress doesn't use sessions by default.

Also, you wouldn't want to simply use the userid, because that would be insecure since anybody could hack a cookie with any username.

bbPress and WP both store two cookies, the username and the encrypted hash of the password. You'll have to use those in combination to do a lookup to the database to make sure they both match. I'd advise taking a look through the bbpress source code... it's not terribly difficult to understand.

The other thing you could do... you could create a plugin / hack for bbPress to assign a session parameter after a successful login, which you could then check for in your other code.

And then that would give me the userId which I could then query the users table with?

I assume this is a non-WP page as well?

You can check the bbpress session cookie and then use that to check the user against the database. You'd have to use the same logic that WP or BB uses (the latest bbpress changes this logic). You'll also need to make sure that the cookie domain is set correctly.

I've actually had to do this recently myself... it's pretty simple and works well.

I'm using WP/BBP as a site wide CMS. It's been really great so far thanks to the light-weightness of bbPress. I've really just had to hack the tables and change a little code to get the extra info in there that I want.

The only issues I'm wondering about is how to get the user data on a non bbPress page... I need to see if the user is logged in, and then get their userId...

Just to give you an example, I allow the user to save certain things, and I use the user id from the wp/bbpress users table. Can anyone suggest a light weight way to do this?

I fixed it! \o/

Remember how the cookies "looked" identical?

Well they weren't.

The cookies created by bbpress added the hash to the end of the cookie name.

Both Safari and Camino didn't reveal this, but Flock did. I was using these other browsers as a testing platform because I needed to clear cookies in between each test.

I added:

$bb->usercookie = 'wordpressuser';
$bb->passcookie = 'wordpresspass';

To my bbpress config to solve the problem. (which I found on one of the links you sent me)

I actually like the idea of the cookie name including the hash. Isn't this more secure? Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't this make it near impossible for another site to read that cookie?

Thanks for your help Trent!

It will still let different cookies if you don't have them 'integrated' for the login from the config.php. That is why I was leading you towards those articles. I am sure being an WPMU user you are fully aware of working with complex issues and I didn't want to try and 'dumb it down' too much. In terms of the cookies issue, I have had plenty of problems moving things around and changing structures to know that the 'Wordpress Integration' under the bbPress Documentation is the best when bbPress is in a directory inside Wordpress, but not always!

If you let me know how you have it setup and what you have in your wp-config.php and config.php for cookie and integration stuff, I might be able to assist more. I just know that if you already installed bbPress and it is using bb_users versus wp_users, it might be harder to get the cookies working (at least in my experience)..

Thanks for the heads up Trent. Unfortunately those mostly focus integration of user databases etc. Which I have already done.

Perhaps I'll take a look at how each application is looking for the cookies. There might be a clue in there.

It seems most people have the forum in a sub directory of wp,.. which makes things much easier.

Steven,

I not sure of the 'exact' best procedure of combining bbPress and WPMU, but these are some users that have it going:

http://bbpress.org/blog/2006/09/simpler-integration-with-wordpress

http://codex.wordpress.org/Ergate/wpmu_bbPress_integration

http://mu.wordpress.org/forums/topic.php?id=2166&replies=10

It is a little different with WPMU as the table structures are a little different, but those posts seem to most likely have the key. Integrating with normal WP is much easier.

Ok... Let me start off by saying I'm not your "average" user seeking help. I've spent the last 2-3 hours combing this forum and trying almost every combination of cookie configurations and tweaking.

My site is setup like this:
domain.com/blog
domain.com/forum

This is what I have thus far:
In my bbpress config.php

$bb->cookiedomain = '.domain.com';
$bb->cookiepath = '/';
$bb->sitecookiepath = '/';

In my wpmu wp-settings.php around line 245

if ( !defined('COOKIEPATH') )
	define('COOKIEPATH', '/' );
if ( !defined('SITECOOKIEPATH') )
	define('SITECOOKIEPATH', '/' );
if ( !defined('COOKIE_DOMAIN') )
	//define('COOKIE_DOMAIN', '.' . $current_site->domain);
	define('COOKIE_DOMAIN', '.domain.com');

Of course I replaced "domain.com" with my actual domain.

The result is I get a total of 4 cookies when I login into both sites.
Both sets are identical except expiration. (I even edited the expiration date with no avail, apparently bbpress is a full year and day off)

the cookie properties look like this:

website name path secure expires value
bbpress
.domain.com wordpresspass / no Mar 03, 2008 long_hash
.domain.com wordpressuser / no Mar 03, 2008 test

wpmu
.domain.com wordpresspass / no Mar 04, 2007 long_hash (same as the other)
.domain.com wordpressuser / no Mar 04, 2007 test

The only difference is the expiration date. As you can see bbpress has an issue with the date.

Perhaps I need sleep, or I don't understand how the cookies are supposed to work. But I'm beat.. I can't battle it anymore tonight.

I'm going to go get some sleep. Perhaps I'll be able to figure it out from a fresh approach.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Steven

here's one problem mozey, you can't access the admin backend of bbpress anymore after you've done this trick!

I'm signed in as my site admin, and although WPMU recognizes me as the admin, BBPress does not.

oh yeahh, i forgot to mention, i'm not even going to bother with the BB user table for anything!. I can get it to the point where i log in using one portals for both platforms, but i have'nt tested it beyond that.
