I'm realizing how much I rely on the fact that WP has documentation of its hooks and template tags... without this info on BB, it is difficult to find how to do stuff.

I have an integrated installation of WP 2.6.2 + BB alpha 2.
I want to apply a different style to a posting/comment in my forums if it is written by a user who is an Author or higher in my WP user table. How do I check for this within BB? Inside BB, all of these WP users (my WP authors as well as standard WP users) are BB members... I do not want to give my WP authors BB moderator functionality. So can I check the WP role directly from the user table within BB?

I have wordpress 2.6 and bbpress 1.0 alpha. The bbpres is installed in a subfolder of wordpress instalation. All works very fine. But when I try get access to wordpress funcions I add the following code in the first line of bb-confing: require_once(dirname(__FILE__) . '/../wp-blog-header.php');

After this, when I try to login in the forum, I see a "Page not found" page. If I refresh the page, it appears as if I'm not logged in, but when I am in the blog, I'm logged in.

Hi
I have WP 2.6 installed and the latest svn version (updated yesterday) of bbPress. The two are integrated with each other. I had a look at the users and roles in WP and noted that bbPress had changed all the roles to the bbPress role types. The WP roles are now all gone. The problem is that no one of my users can login, only the first admin user which I created when installed WP and bbPress. If I change another user from member to admin he cannot login.

Can I change back the roles to the default WP roles or do you have any clue what have happened?

It depends how much you trust editors with user records. I would tend to go with this.

Administrator - Key Master
Editor - Moderator
Author - Member
Contributor - Member
Subscriber - Member

As you can see, you don't need to have one-to-one relationships.

Hi, I've just installed a fresh install of WP and bbP and I've got to the point where I need to choose the user role mappings.

However, although I've used WP extensively I've never used bbP before so I'm not sure what mappings I should use. I was thinking maybe something like the following:

Administrator - Key Master
Editor - Administrator
Author - Moderator
Contributor - Member
Subscriber - Inactive

Can anyone with experience give me any better suggestions? Also, can I easily change these roles later?

Unfortunately, Detective's solution doesn't work with the latest versions. I'm experiencing the same issues (integrated scenario):
User registers on bbpress and logs in there
User can acces the WP Site Admin section, but it says: Welcome, . (a space instead of the user name)
User comments are registered as 'Anonymous'

I noticed the only way to fix this is to go to WP user management panel, editing and saving the user.
So the user has to be actively (and manually :\ ) updated to have his name listed under his comments.

I haven't found any way to avoid this, but if anyone can I'd be much abliged!

I *believe* someone becomes inactive only if you mark them inactive. You can change the user status by going to their profile page, then clicking the edit tab, as keymaster.

I've never seen it happen automatically. And, on the edit tab of the profile page, there is a description on the bottom of what blocked and inactive mean.

Inactive users can login and look around but not do anything.
Blocked users just see a simple error message when they visit
the site.

Note: Blocking a user does not block any IP addresses.

The default role is set in bb-includes/capabilities.php around line 485

$user->set_role('member');

This is a job for a plugin, but I haven't tried to write one yet, so if you were to change that word
member
to
inactive
, my guess would be that that would make any new member inactive and then the keymaster would need to edit their role to make them members.

ACTUALLY - that didn't work :D

In bb-includes/pluggable.php, line 361 says this:

bb_update_usermeta( $user_id, $bb_table_prefix . 'capabilities', array('member' => true) );

I changed member to inactive there, and now new users are inactive when they first register.

Like I said, this is really a job for a plugin, but you could probably use this last change temporarily until a proper plugin is written.

HTH, and be warned this is not a good way of doing it. It should really be a plugin I think.

hello all.

I have tried some search about this but did not find anything.

I'd need the new users on a bbPress forum to be set to Inactive by default.

the reason is I need to set up a forum for an experiment in secondary schools. we have to take in account the possibility of rude behavior from people not participating to the experiment.

the administrator is not likely to be very present on line, so it would be a problem if anybody could just register and start posting indesiderable contents, that could sit there for a while.

a temporary fix would be setting the default role for users to Inactive (the administrator then has the possibility to verify that the user is really who he say to be). I've tried to look into the code, but was not able to figure it out how to do it. hints would be welcomed.

another option (the one I'm currently adopting) is removing the register function and putting something like "write to this email address if you want to be registered", then using this plugin to allow administrator to add users:

http://bbpress.org/plugins/topic/admin-add-user/

but this is not how really we want it to be. an example of it is the "candidate" system used in vanilla forum: you candidate yourself to be a member of the forum, and if admin agree then you're in. (why then not using vanilla? because there's a graphic customization people have worked into, and we are running very short on deadline, say the url is in this morning newspaper... :-) ).

I'd also be grateful for any other suggestions.

Even if you manually fix the role of users registered in bbpress to "subscriber" the display name field is still blank. So unless I am missing something, you do need to fix this problem. Otherwise, bbpress registrants become subscribers login at wordpress and their username shows as Anonymous.

... sorry for asking for help.... thought forums where here for that...

I can't program, never said I did, I build things with trial and error, learning that way. Reading and trying to understand how and why things works. So if I get just a piece of code I'll try that and try other suggestions too. I am more a reverse engineer. The site and things I've builded can be done in 2 hours if you are a phpprogrammer, I do it in two weeks or more, but I get it done (don't give up) and am proud if I acomplisch what I wanted.

Assuming someone can program cause his plugin is awesome wont work everytime :). Most things I can figure out myself, but if some small stupid thing like a ddlb takes too much time I am gonna ask the forums (duh). Kinda get the feeling now that, if you can't program, you shouldn't do it or ask for help...

Like the post above from Chris, you've managed to make it work and you are assuming I can figure this out too cause it was apparently easy for you to figure out. But I don't think like a programmer, it's hard for an person like me to figure it all out. I don't know where all code is pulled from or is placed. I use bbpulp a lot to find the needed code, but that isn't always enough.

I'm glad Chris found an answer, but then I ask: how did you do it? Can you show me the code and explain some of it so I can learn from it...

Better look like it like this, I can build a car, but I don't know how to construct it. I know I need an engine, but I don't know how the engine works. I know what it does, I know I need it... and so I puzzel the car together. A mechanic will do it in 1 week, I'll do it in 1 year...

I am weird, I know :)

Well I just wanted to get this of my chest and also mention I aint attacking anyone (especially Chris, just jused your post as an excample)

So no hard feelings (from me anyway) and thanks for your time

I'm not a programmer. I don't know that much about bbPress. I've never written a bbPress plugin. But from reading the source and looking at other admin plugins, I was able to make this work. I'm sure you can too.

Haven't you noticed this line from bbPress source (L1296 in template-functions.php)?

$roles = $bb_roles->role_names;

I think chrishajer and me thought you knew how to program with PHP (by checking your website). Yes, chrishajer gave you a piece of code that is a hint not a just-can-work code at everywhere. I thought you can code with PHP, and you should be able to put the rest on your own code. However, I was wrong or you think someone else has taken care of the rest for you?

you also need to do
global $bb_roles;
, in case you really can not code with PHP.

(edit: Sorry for this emotional post to everyone else)

Okay chris, now try this:

Make a clean php file.
Now add that code you mentioned
Make the php page a plugin and activate it.
Now go to your admin -> pluginpage and you'll see an empty ddlb too :)

It works in your PNG image example, cause you just copied the code in the same page. It will always work that way, but not in a clean file...

Check this:

http://www.chrishajer.com/bike/XLF/bbpress-roles.png

I did that using the stuff I mentioned in this post. So, it works as an administrator since they can edit other users. There is a drop down with all 6 roles listed.

> yes i did try that one already, but it gave me a
> empty ddlb (proberbly because the user's role
> couldn't be defined) .

It has nothing to do with the current user's role not being defined. That is a list box that appears in the admin section with all roles listed. That will provide you with all roles. I would suspect you need to be logged in as admin to see it though. Where are you trying to use it, and for what? Maybe someone can help you with a little more information.

@Null: of course, you get all roles' data. I meant you can get each role's name from the returning result of
$bb_roles->get_roles()
(I thought you was going to do something special). However chrishajer has told you the useful information for all your need, you just need to read from http://trac.bbpress.org/browser/trunk/bb-includes/template-functions.php#L1296 to 1311. If you really want to do something with bbPress, you have to read the source of bbPress.

Hi guys,

Sorry ddlb = drop down listbox

@ chris: yes i did try that one already, but it gave me a empty ddlb (proberbly because the user's role couldn't be defined) .

@livibetter: din't try it but that will give (I think) all roles, but not in a ddlb.

For forums there is a function: bb_forum_dropdown, but I couldn't adapt it to get user roles, so I think a whole new function must be written to put it in the plugin I am working on. I have the feeling all the pieces are there, but I have no idea how to put them together :)

Thx,
