Hi all.
Setting up a wordpress site for someone and I've decided to use bbpress for a particular section as it seems best fitting for what we need.

I simply want the forums to be for members only, for example a page simply stating 'you must register blah blah..' would be fine.

Is there an hidden admin panel for bbpress I'm not seeing? All I am aware of is /wp-admin/options-general.php?page=bbpress

I felt I'd just post a new thread as most things I came across were > a year old. I read the newer versions work much improved out of the box than before, so hopefully this is pretty easy.

Thanks,

I was able to get this partially accomplished using the Members Only plug in. Also, it helped a lot to put all my forums in a category, even though I do not have very many forums. At least, now the only thing my non-users will see is the goofy message "Oh brother. No forums where found here", even though I do indeed have forums.

HOWEVER, I still have the problem of the Forum Menu item appearing in my menu bar. I don't know how to keep it out until users log in.

I've spent the better part of a day fiddling with it and still it is here.

If I can figure out which file has the "Oh Brother!" text in it, I could at least change it to say something like "This area requires user authorization".

Please clarify to me if I've misread this, but each user can only have ONE role, correct?

Which is why I wanted a way to do this without altering member roles. Because I have a fair quantity of members with a unique role already (I heavily use User Role Editor).

Like I said... I have two users who have a custom role already: StoreItems. So they can edit items in the store from a different plugin. Their bbpress membership is normal. One of these users will eventually have VIP and the other will have Special.

In order to do as you instructed, I will have to make some convoluted things happen.

Public Forums Area

Special Forums Area
-> Participant Member can read here
-> Special Member, you need to upgrade from Participant member
-> No custom setting but make sure each forums is not hidden or private.
-> Make sure this Special Member role able to

Restricted Forums Area
-> VIP Member
-> Custom setting, make sure each forums hidden.
-> Make sure this Special Member role able to
-> publish_replies
-> publish_topics
-> edit_topics
-> edit_replies
-> assign_topic_tags
-> read
-> read_hidden_forums

And the most important to make sure you edit all forums and topics based on above setting, just edit it and you have Members plugin setting.

Try activate members plugins and tick 'Enable the role manager' and 'Enable the content permissions feature' and when you edit a forum or topic a Members setting appears. Use it to restrict roles.

What I want to do is have a few forums with different visibility and use functions. The problem is that every way I have found how to do this thus far requires me editing the user's role, which is not what I want to do. This will quickly become too bloated for me. I would rather use some other kind of meta information.

The main reason is because I will something akin to the following:

-Most of the forums (100% visible to all members and public; only members may post)
-Special Forum (100% visible to all members and public; only SOME members may post)
-Restricted Completely Forum (0% visible to public and general members; SOME members may see and post)

It is important to mention that the members who can see the restricted areas are not necessarily admins or moderators. Also we use WP for all kinds of things aside from just bbPress and I heavily use User Role Editor already. I have, for example, two users who have a special role that allows them to edit items in the store. One of these users will eventually have access to the restricted forum; the other will not and will have no idea it exists. Neither of these users are moderators or admins on the fourm. You can see how at this point relying on user roles to accomplish this task is unrealistic.

What I wouldn't mind doing is some kind of meta way of doing this. I have a few ideas but I wanted to ask if anybody else has done this or knows of a way to potentially do this before I start mucking around and potentially breaking things.

Thank you!

Hello, I would like to create a special forum for my paid members. I am using the Your Members http://yourmembers.co.uk plugin for my user management. I thought that I would simply create a new forum called "members" with some topics and I would put this forum using a shortcode to the members page, which would have restricted access for members only (using the Your Members plugin).

Yet it seems not to work this easy way. The logged in member can't see any forum on that page and there is only a line of text with latest forum news and a form for a reply. Once he clicks either on the news or writes a reply, he gets a 404 page. Do you have any idea why is that?

I was trying to make the forum private or hidden, but I don't understand at all how these features work and I wasn't able to find any documentation for bbPress yet:(. Could someone please advise me on how would it be the best way to create the paid member's only forum? Just to make clear, I also do have a normal forum for my free users (who have to be logged in to be able to post into it). Thank you very much for your help! All the best from Misha

I just spent hours figuring this out so I thought I’d try and save others the bother by sharing it here.

The basic aim was to hide the contents of topics in a bbPress 2.0 forum from any users not logged in. This makes for a nice private forum.

I found suggestions about making forums hidden, private and so on but none of them really worked as they hid them for logged in users too.

My final solution was to make bbPress ‘dumb’ when it comes to logged out users. I.e., it could either be clever and say “there are topics, but you’re not allowed to see them until you login” or it could just say “there are no topics”.

The following code does the latter, dumb version by hooking into the forums, topics and replies loops.
function pj_hla_logged_in_topics($have_posts){
if (!is_user_logged_in()){
$have_posts = null;
}
return $have_posts;
}
add_filter('bbp_has_topics', 'pj_hla_logged_in_topics');
add_filter('bbp_has_forums', 'pj_hla_logged_in_topics');
add_filter('bbp_has_replies', 'pj_hla_logged_in_topics');
I simply placed this within my theme’s functions.php but you could just as easily wrap this in a function.

Hope that helps someone!

I try to change some definition manually in bbp_get_caps_for_role() like this:

case $participant_role :
$caps = array(
// Forum caps
'read_hidden_forums',

// Topic caps
'publish_topics',
'edit_topics',

// Reply caps
'publish_replies',
'edit_replies',

// Topic tag caps
'assign_topic_tags',
);
break;

and reinstall wordpress and bbpress, create a Participant account and it works.
Everything seems OK but only when I access pages like: http://localhost/?forum=a-hidden-forum, it returns a 404 page, not a topic list.
Other pages like "http://localhost/?topic=a-topic-in-a-hidden-forum", "http://localhost/?post_type=forum" and widges in sidebar return the right contents.

I also try adding both

// Forum caps
'read_hidden_forums',
'read_private_forums',

to Participant and as a result, every pages are displayed even "http://localhost/?forum=a-hidden-forum" and topics in Private forum.

It seems have something to do with actions in "bbp-init" in which return a wrong string when reaching for perameter "forum".

Sorry for not viewing all previous QoA but the most similar topic I've found is "Forum Participant role cannot view private forum" but it doesn't help.

Is there any way to solve my problem?
Thanks for any help :)

Thanks for the help.

I did not end up having to reload the permalinks but that may something to do with my site settings.

I also turned it into a plugin which can be seen here
http://pastebin.com/2mDe0qpW

It is set up so that

[bbp-forum-header]
[bbp-forum-site-index id=8]
[bbp-forum-site-index id=7]
[bbp-forum-footer]

will provide a single list of all forums on sites 8 and 7 if anyone else would like to try it

Don't modify the core function. Makes a plugin and make your own Shortcodes instead. You'll need to look into how switch_to_blog works. You'll also need to see how my Switch Site Rewrite plugin reloads the permalinks for each switch. The reason this isn't in core is its a labor intensive set of requests for the server to pull off, particularly across multiple servers or data centers in large installations.

Well, I am currently modifying the bbp-forum-index shortcdde so that it will take a site id as an optional parameter.

This is the method I have so far, but I am not sure how to call the bbp_has_forums() on the other site, as I do not know a huge amount of php

Any help would be appreciated

public function display_forum_index( $attr, $content = '' ) {
                global $bbp;

                if ( !empty( $content ) || !is_numeric( $attr['id'] ) ) )
                        return $content;

				if ( empty( $attr['id'] )
				{
					$current_site = get_current_site();
					$site_id = $current_site->id;
				}
				else
				{
					$site_id = $attr['id'];
				}
                // Unset globals
                $this->unset_globals();

                // Start output buffer
                $this->start( 'bbp_forum_archive' );

                // Breadcrumb
                bbp_breadcrumb();

                // Before forums index
                do_action( 'bbp_template_before_forums_index' );

                // Load the forums index
                if ( bbp_has_forums() )
                        bbp_get_template_part( 'bbpress/loop',     'forums'    );

                // No forums
                else
                        bbp_get_template_part( 'bbpress/feedback', 'no-forums' );

                // After forums index
                do_action( 'bbp_template_after_forums_index' );

                // Return contents of output buffer
