When logged in as an admin or keymaster you can promote a user using their edit profile page in the front end of your site.

There probably should be a way to do it in the admin, but there isn't yet.

Perhaps I am stupid, which I like to believe that I am not. However, I have searched through documentation, search results here and on google, and scoured the backend. I still can not find a way to promote users to moderator or keymaster/admin status. One method for promotion I thought of was to copy the mysql entry for my capabilities into that of another user, but I have no such entry to copy from for moderators. Should the promotion/demotion of users be something part of the software? Does it exist and I am not seeing it? Please help at your convenience.

Thanks in advance,
Stu

To add a user as a moderator, admin or another key-master, log in with your admin account and then go to the user profile that you want to change. Then you just 'edit' their profile and one of the options is to change their role. It isn't done through the admin right now.

Sorry to be asking so many questions, but I'm having trouble finding answers to these basic questions and I figure it's easiest to ask them one at a time. Also, I think I was seduced a little by how easy it was to get WordPress going. bbPress seems a lot harder. Anyway:

How do you add moderators? In the admin page, I can see who they are, but can't add anybody.

Do I have to get the people that I am inviting as moderators to register themselves, and then I can go and change their privileges? Or can I somehow add them on my own (which is what I'd like).

Thanks!

If anyone is interested, I just hacked together a plugin to so this.

It was crazy as it look aproximately two seconds to do it, using the code base of the Forum Restriction plugin and about one line of change. Allow me to get a backend worked out and if someone likes I'll post it up.

Does anyone know how one would go about filtering the RSS feed out as well to prevent users from seeing this?

No, but it won't be hard to write your own. Add a link to each topic (visible only to mods) to /hide.php?id=%topic_id%. In hide.php, check if the user is actually a moderator, if so add an entry to bb_topicmeta indicating this topic is hidden. Then use the right filter to monitor the topics and remove them from the list if it's marked as hidden and the user isn't a moderator. Finding the right filter might be hardest; I suspect it's
forum_topics
but don't know. List of filters here.

[edit] oh yes, also worth adding another element to the new topic creation form, asking if it should be hidden, so that the topic won't be visible in between creation and being marked as hidden.

Is there a plugin that can be used to hide a topic? I'd like moderators and the keymaster to be able to have topics that only they can see (with [Hidden] appended to the name). Easy switching between hiding and public viewing is also needed.

FYI, I modified the plug-in slightly to prevent moderators from messing with other forums they are not assigned to by this plug-in in bbpress version 0.8.

changed function forum_moderators_process_capacities in forum-moderators.php, added some additional filters:

'edit_others_tags' ,
'edit_others_topics' ,
'manage_posts' ,
'ignore_edit_lock' ,
'edit_others_posts',
'delete_posts',
'delete_topics',
'close_topics',
'stick_topics',
'move_topics',
'moderate'
);

added filters:

delete_topics',
'close_topics',
'stick_topics',

Having some issues with this plugin. I'm able to access forum Users->Forum Moderators from my admin panel and can also update moderator privileges for specific users here. The updates seem to stick and appear correct on this page, however they do not seem to actually effect the user (moderators) themselves.

When I log in as one of these moderators whom I've assigned to a specific forum, they are still able to moderator any forum I have created, whether they are assinged as a moderator to it or not, so basically they have global moderator privileges.
