I have a similar situation where forum members have asked to have an option as to which way the posts are sorted. If reversed, my recommendation would be to keep the initial post as the first in the sequence, followed by the most recent posts (in reverse order). Again, I've been looking for a plug-in that will provide this as an option, not a default.

Thanks in advance!

Thaks,

I'll try this way for next time, in the meantime I ended using PhpMyAdmin to delete post and tipic with status=1

I hope this fucntionality will make its way in the core because it can become a real problem.

I had a problematic user, I first deleted all his messages (deleted, but not really deleted as BBPress don't really delete) then I deleted his account.
A few hours later he recreated his accoun and suddently all supposedly deleted messages appeared with "anonymous" has author.... very strange.

Using phpMyAdmin the problem is gone :)

How to use your script ?

Thanks again

wittmania, i installed your plugin. it works well with php or html formated ads but it crushed my .gif ads.. basically i followed all your instructions.. hmm... i added this line in bb-ads.php -->

                $extList['gif'] = 'image/gif';
$extList['jpg'] = 'image/jpeg';
$extList['png'] = 'image/png';

Note private messages are cut off at 2048 characters (1965 in practice, from my testing) because the db field is varchar(2048).

That's not that much to wordy writers.

I might try to change this to longtext. If I do I'll post back on the results, and if good, the method.

Update: Somebody asked me how to add a name (instead of just the e-mail address) to the new message received e-mail notification. To do this, just use this format:

$admin_email = "Your Name <you@yourdomain.com>";

When the e-mail is delivered, it will show up as being from "Your Name" and not "you@yourdomain.com". I'm not sure that this will work on all PHP configurations, but it works on mine.

Pravin seems to have a solution. The moderators would have to add a section to the profile and then conditionally change the code to Pravin's if that's what the user set. If Pravin has the solution, everything else is trivial (in complexity), but it will mean some coding and modification of core files for someone.

Did this ever get solved? I am participating in a group where this topic has come up. The moderators don't want to make a global change, they are looking to allow only user-controlled message chronology.

I have launched an "Area 51" forum to test and display the effects of my plugins. You can see bb-Ads in action here:

http://blog.wittmania.com/bbpress/

Also, I have now tested this plugin with pretty links, and it does work. The only changes to be made in the coding as given in ad1.php is that you have to delete the
.php
from the
strpos
check. This will just look for the words in the link instead of the actual
.php
file names.

UPDATE: The sample ad file now includes the code necessary to display different ads based on the context. For example, if it is a topics page, it will display one ad and if it is a forum page, it will display a different one.

The code is something like this:

<?php
if ( strpos($_SERVER['REQUEST_URI'], 'topic.php') ) { ?>
<div>An ad for a topics/posts page</div>
<?php
} elseif { another specific page;
} else { default ad;
}  ?>

The sample file includes
elseif
checks for topic.php, forum.php, profile.php, and a "default" if none of the above pages are detected.

This would allow you to have one file per sponsor/advertiser, with a different context-based ad for each situation.

Works perfectly Pravin, any chance I could get you to add the conditionals to the code snippet?

I would like anywhere the topic list is displayed, a small arrow or link next to the topic_id (or just a link) to click this and the current sort order would be changed. So if it is a normal, chronological display and the link is clicked, for it to display in reverse chronological display.

Or is this something that is too complicated?

I see now....the first topic and then reverse the order of the replies. Off the top of my head that would seem like a difficult thing to do as each reply is given an reply ID based off the previous reply ID (sequential). Displaying the order would have to be done by hacking the core files for topic.php so that is changes from desending to acending in the mySQL query. I think it can be done though, just have to look at the core code I guess.

This is my first attempt at a plugin, so be gentle! :)

This plugin allows you to display custom ads/messages anywhere on your site, including the front page, profile pages, forum pages, and even between posts.

The plugin randomly selects a file from a pre-determined directory, or you can specify a specific file to display. File types include .php, .html, .htm, or you can add custom file types as needed.

The files themselves can include links, images, PHP functions, and CSS stylization. You can customize the ads/messages however you want.

You can get the 0.1 version here:
http://blog.wittmania.com/bb-ads

PLEASE feel free to let me know if you find any bugs. I'm also extremely open to suggestions for future revisions, as my PHP skills are only slightly better than my bow hunting skills, which are pretty pathetic.

Enjoy!

Sure Trent,

A normal conversation goes like

Initial post
reply 1
reply 2
reply 3
and so on.

How about a button or link that allows the discussion to be read like:

and so on.
reply 3
reply 2
reply 1
initial post.

What do you mean exactly? Topics have the most recent discussions in it first? Could you put in an example?

Instead of oldest to newest, can we have a button that shows the messages from newest to oldest? That way people who have been keeping up on a topic can see the latest messages first.

Anyone?

Several people have asked for additional capabilities to be added to this plugin:
1. That an e-mail alert would be sent out every time a member received a new private message, and
2. That a "PM this user" link could be added to the profile page.

I know ardentfrost is busy, so I have posted instructions on how to modify the plugin files so you can do these two things.

You can view the instructions here:
http://www.wittmania.com/bb-privatemessage-upgrades.txt

Please e-mail me if you have any questions (mike at wittmania dot com). Thanks again to ardentfrost for this exceptional plugin!
