I changed one user (already marked in DB as a member) to 'moderator', saved, then back to 'member', saved... and everyone that was showing as inactive started showing as 'member'. I have no idea what was going on and i'm going to pretend it didn't happen.

Odd. About 3/4 of my members are marked inactive. All of them have a record in wp_user_meta with the data:
bb_capabilities a:1:{s:6:"member";b:1;}

I *believe* someone becomes inactive only if you mark them inactive. You can change the user status by going to their profile page, then clicking the edit tab, as keymaster.

I've never seen it happen automatically. And, on the edit tab of the profile page, there is a description on the bottom of what blocked and inactive mean.

Inactive users can login and look around but not do anything.
Blocked users just see a simple error message when they visit
the site.

Note: Blocking a user does not block any IP addresses.

Hello everybody,

I'd liek to know if there is a way to allow people to post without being logged in, without having to become members.

In my case the fact that people have to enter a user name and a email is quite better-not-to-post-incentive.

In Wordpress there was a way to do that so I suppose it was alike in BBpress, but I could not find how to do it.

Thanks for help.

No problem. Are you using the default theme? That should certainly show a changed user title. Have you checked the database to see if it's there? You would use phpMyAdmin to look into the usermeta table (look for the ID of that particular user).

I don't have that option. I can edit the titles, which is maybe what you mean? All titles are is a word or two under their name. You can change this. To change the user's roles (ie. what he can do), you need to pick a new role from User Type.

hi there,

thanks for the quick reply. No, I'm not using Wordpress. It's a self-made community system. Actually I'm not the one who programmed it, I've just designed and produced all the templates. But I'm also the one who decides what way to go with the forum.

Has anyone here successfully integrated bbpress into their own website with 3rd party member database etc.?

Hi folks,

I like the simplicity of the bbpress forum very much. Since I'm currentlu developing my own travel community (which is a pretty huge project with a blogging system, member profile pages etc) I'm looking at the question which forum I should use.

How hard is it to connect bbpress to an existing member database? I also want to customise the forum heavily so that it fits exactly into my design.

Are there any tutorials or good posts that cover this issue extensively? Or do you recommend using an entirely different forum script for this matter? If so, I need a very very simplistic one.

Thanks very much for your help.

Right now, all my users are members, and I don't want to make them moderators, but is there a user level I can assign to them to bypass the akismet check, so their posts go through without being checked for spam? What happens now is that if they user tinyurl for long urls or put more than about 3 or 4 (not sure exactly) links, akismet flags them as spam. I would like to use akismet, but I don't want my regular member's posts to be filtered.

Can that be done?

I am using .73 but am upgrading to .80 in the next couple of days, if that matters. And I am half-way integrated with WP - the users appear in the WP users page. Oddly, there, most are marked "no role for this blog" although in bbPress > Users they are marked as members.

edit: I should have said "specific user's posts" - right now, I have akismet turned off so no member's posts are checked by akismet, but I wonder if there's a way to "approve" certain members?

Hello,

I'm currently having a problem with being able to start a new topic when I am logged in as a 'member' I have tried re-installing bbpress but it hasn't helped.

Anyone got any advice? Any help would be great!
Rich
