I tried changing the database directly as described, but it didn't seem to work. I didn't have much in it so I dropped it entirely via phpMyAdmin and reinstalled, which created a new Key Master. Now, the Dashboard is accessible again.

The ability to delete all key masters is a definite major design bug. The last one must remain protected. Is this to be fixed? And how about calling the first (and last) key master the Owner? After all, it belongs to him or her to do with as he or she wishes.

I'm having a similar problem in that I may have deleted the Key Master user, as when I log in as 'admin' (which was my Key Master) I don't get the Admin link to go to the Dashboard.

It happened after I deleted a Key Master user, although I thought that admin was still a key master. However, I'm getting all sorts of problems with not being able to log back in after changing the password. It seems not to to 'take.'

Why don't you just set your custom title to "Supermegaadmin"? That should get the message across without needing you to make a new account. :)

I don't mind cutesy names that appear only behind the scenes, but since the role "Key Master" gets displayed to end users, it might be helpful if it were called something more intuitive. Users may grasp the Admin > Moderator > Member > Inactive > Blocked hierarchy, but probably not that there's a Key Master who rules them all. "Superadmin," maybe?

Just a suggestion. I guess as a workaround I'll create a new Key Master account and downgrade my usual account to "Admin."

It may be easiest to modify the database entry. Backup your databases, then open PHP MyAdmin or the like.

You need to know your user id number, which is probably the number in the URL when you go to your profile. Run a query like

SELECT * FROM wp_usermeta WHERE user_id = 1 AND meta_key = 'bb_capabilities'
(changing
1
to your user id) to show the relevant field. Edit this entry so that you're made a Key Master again. I don't know what it should be, but for my account (I'm a Key Master) it's

a:1:{s:9:"keymaster";b:1;}

Since this may break things, you need to have a database backup first.

Or how can I hack the script to give the next registered members this Keystone Master spot?

Just curious. Why the term key master? First time I saw it, I was having flashbacks of Ghostbusters. While I understand the term key and it's use here to some extent, it's just rather strange to me.

Matt I am glad you got this going. Installing bbPress inside of Wordpress makes the cookie sharing easier, but the link I provided above for integration with Wordpress out of the bbPress documentation. It has great information on cookie domains and WP sharing.

Success. I redid everything, dropped the db's bb_ tables, started over, and it worked.

This time I put the forum folder inside the WP folder. (I tried to log in with another browser, so make sure it wasn't just my WP "admin" cookie getting me in, and the other browser worked.)

That by itself shouldn't necessarily have provided a magic fix, only share cookies, right?

So what was it? I don't know for sure... maybe the my-plugins folder didn't have the correct permissions, or the bbPress plugin inside it, and re-doing everything helped.

I wish I could be of more help here to those who can't get it working. Maybe just being a real example of a person who had a no-login issue and resolved it is enough motivation. My advice: start over.

Thanks to Trent for your assistance offer!

Take a look at a post like:

http://bbpress.org/forums/topic/345?replies=4

As well, make sure you have the plugins for integration loaded. One in Wordpress and the other in bbPress.

Also, it integrates well if you have bbpress in a subdirectory of your blog. If it resides somewhere else on the server, you might have to also take a look at:

http://bbpress.org/documentation/integration-with-wordpress/

Start there and if you have more issues, please post more details on what you have and have not tried because there are many different things that could have went wrong for you.

I have a WP blog I wanted to integrate with, so I set $bb->wp_table_prefix, $bb->wp_home, and $bb->wp_siteur to their respective values in config.php.

I can tell this worked because the install did not create a bbPress user table. Good.

The install went smoothly. I set the Key Master to "admin". So far so good. Right after, I tried to log in as "admin". No dice.

I went to my WP blog, logged in as "admin" with my usual pw, got in fine. Changed the pw. Went back to bbPress, tried with the new pw, no dice.

My bbPress install just won't log me on with "admin". What's going on?
