Any shared host worth their salt will automatically, immediately and permanently suspend an account sending that many emails per hour anyway.

Any site sending that many messages needs a dedicated email server with an IP that's registered on whitelists (costs $$$) so major providers will accept that kind of traffic. http://goodmail.com http://www.senderscorecertified.com http://www.isipp.com are examples of popular whitelist services. You also need to make sure the server has rDNS, SenderID, SPF and DomainKeys.

With some additional code and the use of cron, Detective's code could be made to send only a few emails per minute, and track that the same domain does not get an email again within a few minutes. That might slow down the banning a little but we're getting into spammer territory there and I'm not making such a tool available (also phplist does all that anyway).

One other thing: when your IP gets banned, you might also affect other customers on the same shared server. That's a good way to get booted off your host, affecting their other customers.

My recommendation would be to hire an email marketing service.

http://myemma.com/
http://www.constantcontact.com/
http://www.aweber.com/
http://www.verticalresponse.com/
http://www.profollow.com/

There are so many of them. I don't have an affiliation with any of them, but outsourcing this function is better than trying to send them all from your server IMO.

I'm a member of a few forums that send out announcements.

Some hosts will limit the number of emails you can send at once though. Dreamhost, for instance, has a limit of 100 per hour (one of the many reasons I'll be leaving them soon).

It would be overkill for some sites, but it would be nice to have a plugin for PHPList that would share a WordPress and/or bbPress user database; one that would allow user control of mailing list preferences in the WordPress or bbPress profile.

I have an admin interface, but it's ugly and incomplete. I think a plugin for mass mailing your users should have an opt-out option (and opt-in at registration), which i haven't implemented.

I don't agree with _ck_, because a forum or a community should have a way to give important messages to its users (sometimes you can't rely on RSS). If such functionality is not being used correctly, well, that's another case. And i don't think Google or another service could ban you if you present a normal usage (ie., not thousands of e-mails every minute).

I have a custom plugin for that. Here are the two important functions:

function bb_mail_users($subject, $content) {
	global $bbdb;
	$users = $bbdb->get_results("SELECT ID, user_login, user_email FROM $bbdb->users");
	foreach ($users as $user)
		bb_mail_user($user->ID, $user->user_login, $user->user_email, $subject, $content);
}

function bb_mail_user($user_id, $user_login, $user_email, $subject, $message) {
	$message = str_replace('%user_login%', $user_login, $message);
	$message = str_replace('%user_id%', $user_id, $message);
	$message = str_replace('%user_email%', $user_email, $message);

	$subject = str_replace('%user_login%', $user_login, $subject);
	$subject = str_replace('%user_id%', $user_id, $subject);
	$subject = str_replace('%user_email%', $user_email, $subject);

	bb_mail($user_email, $subject, $message);
}

I think it's pretty straightforward. You can write a message like: "Hello, %user_login%, how are you? Thanks for participating in this forum :)" and a subject like "Thanks, %user_login%". Then, to mail that to all your users:

$content = "Hello, %user_login%, how are you? Thanks for participating in this forum :)";
$subject = "Thanks, %user_login%";
bb_mail_users($subject, $content);

You take all that code that howtogeek pasted and put it into a file called "replacebbmail.php" or something. To make php code into a bbPress plugin, it needs to have a header. The header needs to look something like this (change the values to something meaningful to you):

<?php
/*
Plugin Name: Swift Mailer
Plugin URI: http://www.example.com/ (doesn't really matter)
Description: Replace bb_mail with Swift Mailer
Author: You
Author URI: http://www.example.com/
Version: 0.1
*/

Then, paste the code that howtogeek showed at the end of that file. In the end, it will look something like this.

<?php
/*
Plugin Name: Swift Mailer
Plugin URI: http://www.example.com/ (doesn't really matter)

*/

if ( !function_exists('bb_mail') ) {

        require_once('PATH_TO/Swift/lib/Swift/Connection/Sendmail.php');

        $swift =& new Swift(new Swift_Connection_Sendmail("/usr/sbin/sendmail -bs"));
        $from = new Swift_Address("noreply@mysite.com","My bbPress Forums");

        $message =& new Swift_Message($subject, $content);
        if ($swift->send($message, $to, $from)) {return true;}
        else{ echo "Message failed to send to ".$to." from ".$from;}
        $swift->disconnect();
   }
}
?>

The name of the file does not matter really. Save that new file in bb-plugins. Now activate your new plugin in the admin section of your bbPress site.

You will need to configure it before activating it to make sure it works (setting up the path to swift mailer and setting the auth stuff if you need to.)

It really is that simple - just make HowToGeek's code into a plugin and install swiftmailer:

http://bbpress.org/forums/topic/trick-to-fix-some-email-problems-with-08x-plugins-on-09x#post-15776

That reminds me to fix some of my plugins so they use bb_mail() instead of mail() directly.

I don't know about a complete solution, but I've been able to get this one working.

http://bbpress.org/forums/topic/email-authentication-issue#post-17757

If it becomes a large enough issue, I imagine someone will create a plugin for it. Until then, this is a work around.

Integrating something like this does not affect WordPress integration as far as I know. It's just the email function. I imagine WordPress would have the same issue sending out emails unless you use a plugin like this there as well.

has anyone seen a complete solution for this issue? many hosts do not allow php mail() function because it doesn't support smtp authentication

i've seen several posts about swiftmailer, phpmailer alternatives, but none offer a step by step instructions?

interested in modifying files only from the latest verion bbpress-0.9.0.2.zip

also, are any of these solutions integrated with wordpress? or when you use them you lose the bbpress user = wp user integration?

any kind of complete solution would be appreciated by many

Those ini_set() calls could go in your bb-config.php as well and should work just the same.

Having said that, I think this hack will only work on Windows Servers running IIS. But I'm not 100% sure about that.

After experiencing the initial problem of a signup confirmation mail not going out, and going through the various posts on that topic, I finally found a fix without having to use a plugin or use pear functions.

In the file /bb-includes/pluggable.php add the following lines at the top:

ini_set("SMTP","mail.YourDomain.com"); //IP or server name for smtp server
ini_set("smtp_port","25");
ini_set('sendmail_from', 'ValidEmailAccount@YourDomain.com');

This worked in my case. I hope this solves other people's problems too.
