Thanks for the responses. Interesting that some of the larger forums like 9rules notes and forum software (e.g., Vanilla) display the profile on top of the post. I'll probably stick with the left side approach.

I'd certainly not have anything other than the username in the main text column; anything else, be it avatar, signature, status, rep, whatever, just gets in the way. As long as the username is sufficiently noticeable in the sidebar (or alternatively if you're using avatars) posts remain very recognisable without breaking the flow.

Make it wider if you want sidebars on both sides. This layout is pretty narrow and works down below 800x600 resolutions (and on mobile devices I hear) but most web browsers are using 1024x768 and above (use Google Analytics to see what your users are browsing with). You have room to add sidebars on both sides, if you want.

I prefer the profile links on the left, BTW.

What is your opinion on this layout issue? Do you think member profile should be placed above each post or to left of post?

IMO main advantage of placing profile to left of post is readability. This forum is good example of that. The member profile (and avatar) does not break up the flow of the discussion.

On the other hand, the "left side" approach seems to limit your layout options. For example, if you want add a right hand column for hot tags, ads, etc., you start running out of width room.

What do you think?

alright, thanks to all of you. figuered it out eventually. that extra
</div>
 on the add new page was the closing div from
<div id="discussions">
, which is only shown on the frontpage. so i wrapped it like this:

<?php if ( $forums ) : ?>
</div>
<?php endif; ?>

and it solved the problem.

It does fix the page where you "add new" though, right? So, what is different between the front page and the "add new" page? That's where you'll find your problem I think. Look at the modifications you made and find out what is different between the two pages (front page and add new page.)

It definitely does not belong there and is not needed on the "add new" page and it fixes the layout issue there. I did not try removing it from the front page.

Also, you can validate the xhtml which will point to some problems too. I use the Web Developer extension for Firefox, but you can manually validate your pages here too:

hey,

i'm having a problem with integrating bbpress into my wordpress template. when you click on 'add new' on any forum page the layout looks fine, but when you click on 'add new' on the start page, then it messes up the layout. seems there is a stray closing div somewhere, which is only needed sometimes.
have a look here to see what i mean.
actually, if you scroll down i think you can see the same thing happening with the footer here
cheers, b

I made a theme for my forums, and found it rather easy. It was mostly just all css, and a few changes to the front-page.php file.

http://zenhelix.us.to/forums/

I'm using a few plugins also:

Allow Images

bb-avatar

bb-limit-latest-discussion

bb-memberlist

bb-postcount

bb-privatemessage

bb-signature - this one isn't working for some reason, but i didn't really look into it

display-name

forum-moderators - don't know if this one is working either

notification

onlinelist

Thanks to all who made those :)

I'll make the theme more user-friendly and remove the front-page.php changes so that it is more standard and release it to public whenever I change to a new theme. I don't want other people to be using my theme at the same time I am =D

Actually the h2 is the first place I went.

I changed
.topictitle{
font-size: 26px;
font-weight: normal;
display: inline;

}

to

.topictitle h2{
font-size: 26px;
font-weight: normal;
display: inline; width:50%; min-width:300px;

}

This sort of fixed it, but then I lost control of the size for h2.

Using the above code, the title fits, but the size of it was shrunk down too much. Adjusting the size back up didn't resolve the issue. No matter what size I chose, the font for the title remained the same. This was a puzzling development. Anyone know why this would happen?

It looks great. The only recommendation I would make is that the Login and Logout tabs be fused into one. If you are logged in, it shows the word Logout. If you are logged out, it shows the word Login. Anyway, great job.
