What i do in the current stable version is to register a new view called all discussions. It works pretty neat.

I've added the ability to do this to the development trunk. If you want to backport this to an older bbPress, you can follow the changes here:

http://trac.bbpress.org/changeset/1786

Then drop the function
<?php bb_latest_topics_pages(); ?>
wherever you want it in the front-page template to show pagination.

Latest discussions on the front page is meant for latest discussions... so paging has never been a possibility there.

Forum pages do provide paging of topics though.

Hi,

I'm trying to figure out how to add a "next page" to the latest discussions. I have a lot of different forums but want people to see all the content aggregated on the "latest" section because it captures all the topics.

So is there a way to put in a "next page" link on the front page and subsequent pages? I'm not great with php, but if it takes some coding, I could probably manage if someone can give me directions. If it works out, I'll probably make it into a plugin for everyone.

Thanks!

So here's what I found, though I wasn't personally able to get it to work myself, I'm almost positive that someone with a bit more PHP knowledge would have been able to:

This plugin: http://bbpress.org/plugins/topic/forum-last-poster/#post-1538

+ _ck_'s advice in this post: http://bbpress.org/plugins/topic/forum-last-poster/#post-1546

He details how, using
substr
, you can truncate the amount of words being pulled from the any piece of content. Theoretically you could use:

post_text(forum_last_topic_id());

But with the truncation method he mentions. I, unfortunately, just don't know how. :(

That's a great start, Chris - however it basically drops an entire list of recents with excerpts, and I was hoping to have the excerpt for each group listed after that group.

I'm quite the novice when it comes to PHP, but perhaps I can figure out how to mod this.

Would anyone perhaps know how I might display a small snippet of the most recent post in a forum under that forum's title on the front page? So, my front page might look like:

My Forum
Here is a bit of text from the most recent post in this forum

Hey CK, I'm very much interested in this plugin. Also, it'd be great if you can get it to work with Wordpress. So, that you can have the ability to promote a forum topic to a show up in a Wordpress loop.

Just wondering if there's an easy way to add the forum title for each topic on the "latest discussions" list on the front page. i.e. I want to add an "In forum": column to the latest discussion list table.

Something in the topics loop in front-page.php ought to do it.... but what? I tried get_forum_name(), but that takes the forum ID. Is the forum ID available anywhere in the $topic var inside the loop?

I wanted to see if there is any interest in this plugin idea before I start coding it. I may just make it part of the "My Views" plugin.

Many (busy) forums have the smart idea of a front page that consists of moderator promoted threads (topics) instead of just the "latest discussions". But of course some will prefer just the automated "latest discussions" if they don't have enough moderators or the traffic to maintain a hand selected list.

So I could make a plugin that let's moderators promote a topic to the front page. And then in your template you could replace or suppliment the "latest discussions" with the list. Then "latest discussions" would just become an optional view in the views list.

Anyone interested?

That's great! Passing parameters is just giving the function some data to work with.

$latestpost->topic_id
is the topic ID. There are probably some functions like
topic_title()
and
link_to_topic()
or similar that you can use to get the title and link. They too will need the topic ID passed as a parameter, so if those are the actual functions it could be
topic_title( $latestpost->topic_id );
:)

so to get the last poster's username to display, do you do something like this?

<?php echo get_user_name($user_id); ?>

i guess i don't understand the whole passing parameters thing :/

I don't know which ones you had problems with but it's worth noting that some automatically echo and some don't.

<?php user_profile_link(); ?>

=

<?php echo get_user_profile_link(); ?>

If they're
get_anything
then you have to echo them yourself, if they don't have
get_*
then it'll echo on its own.

[Edit] Also remember most functions don't need a $user_id passed as parameter but won't work in this case unless you do pass it.

yes, that worked, thank you.

i'm going through the template-functions.php trying to find how to display the last poster's username and his/her profile link, as well as the link to the topic itself but the only ones i can get to work are these:

<?php echo $latestpost->post_text; ?>
<?php echo $latestpost->poster_id; ?>
<?php echo $latestpost->post_time; ?>

any suggestions? :)
