Also, the name of your file should be of the format bbpress-de_DE.mo not simply de_DE.mo

Actually that has changed now. If you download the file from http://translate.wordpress.org/projects/bbpress/plugin/ then it will have the correct name already, which would be in the format bbpress-plugin-de.mo

one more tip : when on translate.wordpress.org, beware that the translations for your language may be not validated yet. The default export link exports only "current" translations, i.e. validated ones. Use "Only the matching filter" option and you will be able to export all the messages.

use the "file" unix command to check the content of the .mo file. e.g.
$ file wp-content/languages/bbpress/bbpress-fr_FR.mo
GNU message catalog (little endian), revision 0, 732 messages

by using the default export, I was only retrieving one message, and thus nothing was translated...

Can someone please explain what it is and how it works in layman terms? Details are a bit sketchy at http://glotpress.trac.wordpress.org/

Will the translations be pulled live from a web service? Or will every update to the language push .mo .po files to the bbPress installation, and these files will continue to be stored locally? Or is it something entirely different?

Also, in what sort of timeframe/milestone is bbPress planning to make a switch to GlotPress automatic mechanism? I know that the translations are already available at http://translate.wordpress.org/projects/bbpress/plugin/

Finally, you should download the file from http://translate.wordpress.org/projects/bbpress/plugin/ not from http://svn.automattic.com/bbpress-i18n/
In order to download the file, click on the language you want, then scroll down to the bottom of the page, and hit Export.

I wish bbpress.org included all this in their documentation. The existing documentation has nothing to do with how bbPress work now...all documentation is really for the discontinued standalone version.

I tried placing the .po and .mo files in bbp-langauges, languages and my-languages folders within the bbpress plugin directory. None of this worked.

Please help!

The solution is to put translation functions inside the topic_time() function. Note however, that that would indeed translate "August" into "Augusti", but it won't fix the order (it'll still go "month day, year") nor the capitalization (in Swedish, months are spelled with lowercase first letter unless in the beginning of a sentence). In WordPress, the order problem is solved by an admin setting for the date format, but the capitalization issue remains.

I hope that explains it. If I have the time some day, I'll try to submit a patch for it to be fixed in the next version.
