I can access this:
http://cialar.com/foro/bb-images/bbpress.png

Which means the files (at least that file) are there.

I can also access these and get directory listings:
http://cialar.com/foro/bb-admin/
http://cialar.com/foro/

That tells me that the index.php file in each directory is not getting processed by the web server. Looks like some sort of configuration problem with the server.

Can you put a simple file in the foro directory, call it info.php and put this into it:

<?php
phpinfo();
?>

Then access that at http://www.cialar.com/foro/info.php. See what that tells you. If that is not processed by the web server, then it's a problem with the server, not bbPress.

I don't have a lot of experience on an IIS server, so there may be something simple I'm not familiar with that would cause this.

I am guessing PHP is not enabled here:
http://www.cialar.com/foro/ (IP: 74.208.22.70)

It is however enabled here:
http://www.foro.cialar.com/ (IP: 74.86.125.241)

Those are two completely different machines. The one where phpBB is now is a Linux/Apache machine with PHP 5.2.5. The cialar.com one if IIS.

I am pretty sure this is a configuration thing with your server, and where you have bbPress installed does not support PHP.

Is it possible the files were corrupted upon uploading? Seems like it's a server configuration thing, not even related to PHP or CGI. You should be able to view this file, for example, but you cannot:
http://www.kreativoase.at/taufkerze/forum/bb-images/bbpress.png

In fact, it's an internal server error code 500, but the server is configured to show this error message, which might be misleading. If you have access to error logs, that will help determine what's causing the 500 error.

If it's something applying to that directory and all lower lever directories, maybe there is a problem with the .htaccess file (if you are using one) in the forum directory. Do you have a proper .htaccess file? Please post the content here. I am starting to think an error in the .htaccess file is the problem for it to cause a 500 error on the forum directory or any subdirectory you try to access.

Permalinks on false is good.

bbPress does not need its own database, but it does need a database, and the table prefix will be bb_ by default. So long as that doesn't conflict with any other tables you already have, it's OK to use an existing database.

Hi,

i have installed how it will be described in the documentation.

When i go to my install.php (http://www.kreativoase.at/taufkerze/forum/bb-admin/install.php) I am getting this:

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request. Your administrator may not have enabled CGI access for this directory.

I have CGI on my webserver. I looked in my database. There are no new tables. This is the same database where my wordpress is.

What can I do? I have the permalinks on "false".

Must I install bbpress in a own database?

Sorry you're giving up. It's not normally this difficult.

I looked at your site and see that there is no wordpress in the URL, the pages are just:

http://mysite.com/about/

I do see in the source of the page that the path to the theme is in a directory called wordpress...

I think we're in big trouble if someone with and IQ of 145 can't figure it out.

404 errors cannot have anything to do with your database config settings. If you cannot access install.php, something else is wrong with your config or possibly the .htaccess rewrite rules for WordPress. I'd be willing to bet it's from rewrite rules. If you're interested in taking a fresh look at it, can you post the config.php?

Sadly enough I thinK I'm going to have to give up on this one. I've tried everything and I can't get something as simple as the Install.php to perform. Beyond that, while reading around it seems that the majority of problems come AFTER the install..so this journey could be a troublesome one if I continued. :( I try not to be a quitter but "ease of use" isn't something that goes hand-in-hand with bbpress and I have a deadline. I don't have a few days to wait to get it all settled, but thanks if you read this far......I'll probably settle with smf or vanilla... :(

Do I have to create my own database for bbpress through MySQL on my godaddy Linux hosting........?

Hi during the install of bbpress something must have gone wrong since I'm getting a "page not found" display when I attempt to bring up my "install.php"

I'll go over every step in hopes to find the problem.

When opening config.php I changed:
BBDB_NAME
BBDB_USER
BBDB_PASSWORD
BBDB_DOMAIN
and
BBDB_EMAIL
All to what those fields said in my wordpress wp_config.php file.

I installed my bbpress folder inside my wordpress folder.
My wordpress folder is directly under my site folder.
I do have multiple domains under the same server but that shouldn't create any type of problem.
The location of my bbpress should be: www.mysite.com/wordpress/bbpress/

So I changed the value in my config.php file to the address above.
I also changed the values of >wp_home and >wp_siteurl
to reflect what it says under my wordpress/options/

Do you see anything that I've done wrong? Or am forgetting to do?

In your config.php, you have to set mod_rewrite to false (not true or slugs):

$bb->mod_rewrite = false;

Your server does not support pretty permalinks, at least not as it's configured now. You can figure that part out later (if you're on godaddy, it might never work.) But for now, to get a working forum, change mod_rewrite to false and your links will work.

The reason the theme isn't there is that you installed it to /bbpress/ when you told it it was installed in /forums/. Unless you want to mess with rewrite rules, move your bbpress install into a subdirectory called /forums/ and things should pop into place.

Chris,

Thanks for the reply. I went back to my wp-config file to compare the two. And here is my problem. wp-config is a nice orderly formatted file. everything is laid out nice and neatly and I can see what it is requesting from me.

the bb config.php file is one long run-on sentence. It was very difficult to understand what I needed to change, and what I did not need to change.

So I compared the 2 files, and got through the installation. But the forum has no stylesheet associated with it? Check it out at: http://condofyi.com/bbpress/

I assumed that it would be seemlessly integrated with the style of my WP site. Maybe I do not have the config.php setup correctly? And more importantly, the forum and topic links seem to be invalid.

Any further advice would be great. You have really got me going in the right direction now.

Let me know what you think.

WordPress uses wp-config.php and bbPress uses config.php (although I thought there was talk of prepending bb_ to some files, including that one.)

Anyway, having it in a subdirectory as you do is perfect. If you cannot select the database, then something is wrong in your config.php. The connection details should be the exact same ones as in wp-config.php. Are they? The table prefix should be different in bbPress config.php and can be left as bb_. The table prefix in WordPress wp-config.php might be wp_.

Is there more to the error message? There has been some other trouble recently but it gives a different error message.

I don't know if this is helpful, but I have installed bbPress in its own subdirectory /public_html/bbpress/ whereas all WP elements are installed in the /public_html/ directory.

Hi guys. Trying to install bbPress along with my current WordPress 2.3 installation.

WordPress was a snap! I had that sucker done in about 5 minutes.

bbPress is a different animal. my install.php page says "Cannot select DB".

Is there a comprehensive Install doc that I am missing? I feel as if I have a lot of questions about the info on the page http://bbpress.org/documentation/installation/

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks Trent, it worked. I didn't know I could duplicate the needed entries from wp-config.

Thanks again.

Yes. Your database info is wrong. Maybe you're the supposedly 1% that needs to change the db host - does your hosting provider give any info on connecting to databases?

[Edit] Trent totally beat me to it, and better, too.

It is purely in the Database information. Double check that you have the right username, password and database name. That error just means that it is the wrong info. Double check you have the right password and stuff from your WP wp-config.php

Hi Trent,

I did as you instructed, and it now says;

Cannot select DB.

Could you give me another clue on this?

Right off the cuff, I would do the following until you have it installed correctly:

1) Remove:

$bb->WP_BB = true;
require_once( 'public_html/wp-blog-header.php' );

2) Change to false:

$bb->mod_rewrite = false;

Once you have bbPress installed and integrated with wordpress (logins), then play around with the permalinks and the including bbPRess functions with WP.

I have spent three hours trying to figure out what I'm doing - can someone tell me if this config.php is correct?

I have placed xxx's in place of password, etc..

<?php
$bb->WP_BB = true;
require_once( 'public_html/wp-blog-header.php' );
// ** MySQL settings ** //
define('BBDB_NAME', 'xqyevao_wrdp1'); // The name of the database
define('BBDB_USER', 'xqyevao_wrdp1');     // Your MySQL username
define('BBDB_PASSWORD', 'xxxxxxxx'); // ...and password
define('BBDB_HOST', 'localhost'); // 99% chance you won't need to change this value

// Change the prefix if you want to have multiple forums in a single database.
$bb_table_prefix = 'bb_'; // Only letters, numbers and underscores please!

// The full URL of your bbPress install
$bb->uri = 'http://teachtheboss.com/forums/';

// What are you going to call me?
$bb->name = 'Teach The Boss Forums';

// This must be set before you run the install script.
$bb->admin_email = 'ronaldp423xxxxx.com';

// Set to true if you want pretty permalinks, set to 'slugs' if you want to use slug based pretty permalinks.
$bb->mod_rewrite = true;

// The number of topics that show on each page.
$bb->page_topics = 30;

// Your timezone offset. Example: -7 for Pacific Daylight Time.

// Change this to localize bbPress. A corresponding MO file for the
// chosen language must be installed to bb-includes/languages.
// For example, install de.mo to bb-includes/languages and set BBLANG to 'de'
// to enable German language support.
define('BBLANG', '');

// Your Akismet Key. You do not need a key to run bbPress, but if you want to take advantage
// of Akismet's powerful spam blocking, you'll need one. You can get an Akismet key at
$bb->akismet_key = 'xxxxxxxx'; // Example: '0123456789ab'
