Step 3:

Do you need to install a language other than English? If so, you can find a list of language files here:
http://bbshowcase.org/forums/topic/bbpress-translation-internationalization-into-local-languages

If you need to use a language other than English, you need to navigate to the folder bb-includes and create a folder inside that folder, called
languages
, then put the language files in there.

Step 4:

If your website is www.example.com, and you put your forum in a directory called
forum
, you would open a browser and go to http://www.example.com/forum/ and the installer will start for you.

This is the installation procedure right?
Quick Instructions

 1. Download bbPress from the download page
2. Upload the uncompressed files your server
3. Optionally upload language files to bb-includes/languages/ - You will have to create this directory
4. Visit the intended URL of the bbPress site
5. You will be greeted with the bbPress installer
6. Follow the instructions in the installer
7. Visit “Settings” in the admin area to customise your installation
8. If you have any questions, ask in the forums

In procedure number 3, i cant understand this step. I don't know where i would got to, to initialize this step. And where is the language files? And where I can find the URL you talking about in Step no. 4? Sorry for too many questions, I'm a newbie here in wordpress. Waiting for a immediate reply.

Yes, yes, newbie, here. Sorry about that before anyone bumps me or deletes me for duping or just raises their eyebrows and walks swiftly on. I have used google and other searches frequently. But I still can't work out this database name, database user and password issue. I have copied the unzipped files into website.com/htdocs/blog1 where NetworkSolutions put Wordpress for me. So now BBpress sits at the same level as Wordpress. Is that right?
Now I have copied the values from the WP_config file (did it make those up on install?) but I still get "There was a problem connecting to the database you specified. Please check the settings, then try again." I'm surprised these bear no relation to my actual Wordpress password and user name.
I haven't changed any settings from Wordpress since I installed it. Is there a permissions issue?
Thanks (please)
Michael

In WordPress, just publish a page with no content in it. That gives you a blank page. That is not going to help accomplish what you want though. You can put an iframe in a WordPress page, but I don't think the bbPress software will work there. All the links will be "out" of the WordPress page and iframe.

It was discussed here about a month ago:
http://bbpress.org/forums/topic/unable-to-log-in-in-iframes?replies=9#post-11042

Getting your bbPress install to look like your WordPress install takes a bit of work. It's not as simple as putting it in an iframe.

Hello again everyone,

Thanks again for helping to get my forum up.

My question now is, how can I add a new page to my wordpress site that doesn't have my blog entries on it? You know, like it would still have the site logo at the top, and the sidebar on the right, but then the main part of the page would be blank. The idea is that I would then put my forum on that page, inside an inframe. But I just want to know how to add that blank page.

Thanks very much.

My apologies - I looked through the forum again and found the solution - what I thought was my database password was incorrect. The correct password will be the same as in wp-config.php. Then I just had to overwrite db-mysqli.php with db.php.

After installation I had issues due to pretty URLs - I set this back to false in config.php and everything was fine then. I'll investigate the required .htaccess settings later to get the pretty URLs working again.

The "Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by" error comes from having whitespace before the opening <?php or after the closing ?> in a php file. I would check any modified files for an extra blank line at the beginning or end and see if deleting the line takes care of the problem.

I installed wordpress without problem for two different blogs, but cannot get bbpress to install. I've spent a few hours trying out things this past week with no success. The patch by mdawaffe fixes my error messages related to mysql_get_server_info, however I still get some other strange messages:

Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by (output started at /homepages/10/d171407036/htdocs/bcg/mastertemplate/blog/bbpress/bb-includes/db-mysqli.php:473) in /homepages/10/d171407036/htdocs/bcg/mastertemplate/blog/bbpress/bb-admin/install.php on line 10

Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by (output started at /homepages/10/d171407036/htdocs/bcg/mastertemplate/blog/bbpress/bb-includes/db-mysqli.php:473) in /homepages/10/d171407036/htdocs/bcg/mastertemplate/blog/bbpress/bb-includes/functions.php on line 1898

Can anyone help me with this? I just set up a Wordpress blog for a new product we're distributing, and would like a forum in conjunction with it, so bbPress would be perfect.

If I can't set up bbPress right now because the code is buggy, does anyone have suggestions for other forum software? I would even be ok with temporarily using a different forum setup, then porting it over to bbPress later (if that's straightforward???).

Thanks in advance for any help or advice. I'm a knowledgeable computer consultant, but pretty inexperienced in blogs/forums. I can follow the conversation about patching the php files, and did so using standard web authoring tools. However, I'm not interested in becoming an expert on code versions or using diff tools. I just want a forum software that works well with my new blog for the benefit of our clients, with a minimum of fuss.

Normally, bbPress is not this bad. A couple bugs were introduced which create problems on some systems. My install from a year ago was no where near this hard, but I checked out the new code and if I installed it I would have had this same trouble.

I think the line 80 being referenced is line 80 of /bb-includes/db-mysqli.php

http://trac.bbpress.org/browser/trunk/bb-includes/db-mysqli.php#L80

I think there are 3 possible workarounds:

1. You can try overwriting /bb-includes/db-mysqli.php with /bb-includes/db.php

2. You can manually modify line 80 of /bb-includes/db-mysqli.php

3. You can apply the 745c.diff patch attached to trac ticket 745

4. Wait for mdawaffe to fix it permanently.

I guess a 5th option is to move on to other forum software. I hope you don't do that. bbPress is nice when it works (which is 99.9% of the time.)

Thanks again chrishajer,

Man I had no idea that installing bbpress was going to be so difficult, installing wordpress itself was not bad at all.

I'm having a heck of a time trying to make sense of what I should do now lol. This is VERY confusing to me. I looked for a "db-mysqli.php" file in the bbpress files that I uploaded and did not see anything similar to that. And I don't see that line 80 "mysql_get_server_info", which it says should be changed to "mysqli_get_server_info" anywhere in the config.php file. I'm real lost here lol, so if anyone can just point in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it.

The error might not be on line 18, it might be before that, and 18 is just where it shows up when PHP parses it. Can you post the prior lines as well? Maybe there's a problem with the
$bb_table_prefix =
line if you happened to edit that.

Thanks.

I receive the following error after install:

Parse error: parse error, unexpected T_VARIABLE in .../forum/config.php on line 18

The code relevant to line 18 is:

// The full URL of your bbPress install
$bb->uri = 'http://thebigo.ejoculation.com/forum/';

I've tried editing this to:

// The full URL of your bbPress install
$bb->uri = "http://thebigo.ejoculation.com/forum/";

... as suggested in similar instances, but receive the same error.

It's official, I don't know the answer and I'm forced to admit there are smarter people out there than me. Can someone please help?

If you were integrated with your Wordpress install, wouldn't you just login originally with the same username and password as wordpress?

Regardless, what is the URL of your forum so we can try and relate what you are seeing for errors and problems.

During installation when I go to step 2 I get the following access violation message

PHP has encountered an Access Violation at 0AF7B927
bbPress
Second Step

Now we’re going to create the database tables and fill them with some default data.

 1. Created table dvdgbb_forums
2. Created table dvdgbb_posts
3. Created table dvdgbb_topics
4. Created table dvdgbb_topicmeta
5. Created table dvdgbb_users
6. Created table dvdgbb_usermeta
7. Created table dvdgbb_tags
8. Created table dvdgbb_tagged

At this point the tables have actually been created in the database but I can't go forward with the installation. So if I start again I get the following.

First Step

We found Steve who is already a "Key Master" on these forums. You may make others later.
First Forum
Forum Name:*
Description:

Double-check that username before continuing.

From here everything goes fine and I get this
Finished!

Now you can log in with the username "Steve" and password "*Your WordPress password*".

Username
Steve
Password
*Your WordPress password*
Login address
Diver Forums

Were you expecting more steps? Sorry to disappoint. All done! :)

Unfortunately, I never got a valid password in the process so I can't login. So I tried the password reset and the send me the password features but to be able to email from my server I need to put 2 ini_set statements before the mail statement so it knows which smtp account to use (this is for server security). the problem is that I will have to search all the files looking for the mail function.

Can you help me out here.

Here is my System Info

PHP Version 5.0.4
mySQL Versions:
Server: 4.1.12
Client: 4.1.7

Steve

I'm adding to this because I have since found and edited the registriation_functions.php file so it would send emails. I used the reset password functions to get a new password via email. The first step had me go to a url with a key at the end. Once I got the password I tired to login and got a Key Not Found error. So I took the key part of the url from the first email and forced it into the user meta table in the database. After that, I could login successfully. However, now when I create a topic and post it and then try to view it or any other things like edit users or forums it always returns an unable to locate page error. Well that's where I'm at now. Its 2am so I going to bed.
