That's a valid, good approach and will allow you to switch between templates very easily while retaining customization.

Hello,

I wrote this for my own use, in case it could be of some use for someone, here it is :

http://pastebin.com/f35e5dcbe

This allow to put some html code in header (or example metatags) and footer (for example counter code)

There is no admin part for two reasons :
1) I'm learnig how it works
2) I'm not sure it would be a great idea to have a DB request for a code that never change

So for instance you'll have to edit manually the plugin file

Why use a plug in instead of a direct ad in the template ? because for alpha release the default template (my own is based on kakumei) sometimes change, so keeping the personal code updated each time can be tedious.

Ross, maybe this will point you in the right direction:
http://www.37signals.com/svn/posts/1048-padded-link-targets-for-better-mousing

If not, I can work on it a little later. Basically, you need to add some padding to the link inside the nav bar.

For me though, the links worked identically on IE7 and FF3. Not sure what your experience was.

Thanks so much - AGAIN - Chris!

I ended up combining some of your previous advice with that you've posted above, messed with the CSS to re-position the cramped header items, and am now pretty happy with the look.

See: http://ashb.proofreadercentral.com/bbpress/
PW: testing123

Just one little curiousity - and if it's any sort of hassle, don't respond, but if you can be bothered, I'd be interested in your take on the following:

When using IE as the browser, the nav link back to the ASHB home page doesn't activate until your cursor is close to the top header border - usually, hyperlinks activate as soon as your cursor touches any part of the text. Anything that can be done about this?
NB: No such issue with Firefox!

Ross, I created a little slice of a navbar up top, and put the link over to the right in it. Here's how I did it:

style.css:

#navbar {
        background: #A9A9A9;
        height: 1.5em;
        text-align: right;
        font-size: 1.2em;
}

header.php:

<div id="navbar">
		<a href="http://ashb.proofreadercentral.com/" title="Return to the ASHB website home page">ASHB Home</a>&nbsp;
	</div>

Put that in the header right after the end of the login form and right before the end of the header div. That will give you a little slice up top in which to link to the main website. You can change the color, the height of the bar and the font size.

I don't know why the button is tucked in so close in IE (not FF), but it seems like the negative positioning thing is probably fraught with problems, so I would avoid it.

You could also put your button to return to the main website in this nav bar, but you'd have to make it taller.

Chris,
FF3 is correct.

_ck_ ,
Yes, the sub-menu idea might well be a more elegant solution. I don't mind some work, but I don't know how to go about it.

I'll try your absolute positioning suggestion, but I don't think I'll like the look of the home nav button hard top left

You could use absolute positioning and just put that home button in
position:absolute;top:0; left:0;
which would take it out of the content flow.

There has to be a more natural way to layout that header though. What you might use (though more work) is a sub-menu under the header.

Can you create an image showing exactly where in the header you want the button? You can just scribble on one of these screenshots, showing where you want the button to be. I am unclear on what the correct position for the button is.

Here are two screenshots, IE7 and FF3. Is either correct?

IE7
FF3

I think putting that button outside the header by using a negative margin is a bad thing to do. It also seems to me that a button is probably not a very 'usable' solution to return to the home page of the website. Why not a text link in the header, or in the footer?

If you are set on the button hanging off to the left of the forum in the header, then please describe which of the two screenshots is closer to or exactly what you want.

I'm using the Kakumei Blue theme. I can't understand how this could happen, but without my doing anything, overnight the header on my forum has changed when viewed in IE - it remains as it should when using Firefox.

A navigation button I positioned (by messing with some numbers in some CSS code that Chris kindly provided) has shifted to the right so that it is now too close to the User Name.

But most strangely, the forum name has shifted so that it now overlaps the "Login" box. This was perfect until now, as you'd expect, since it's part of the original design - I just typed in the name of the blog in the space provided in Admin.

Here's the link, which will make it clear what I'm saying (open with IE): http://ashb.proofreadercentral.com/bbpress/
User: tester
Password: testing123

Can anyone offer any explanation for this stuff? More importantly, how do I get the header back to what it was yesterday given that I haven't actually changed anything in the meantime? I'm afraid that if I start tampering with the CSS again, I'll end up messing up the header in Firefox as well!

Cheers

Edit: strange, I've deactivated the plugin and remove the code from the .htacess file, and the forum is accessible. But I was also expecting to start getting the 404 errors again, and I'm not.

I expect I have not got to the end of this problem

Edit 2: Indeed, my WP permalinks aren't working now. This integration thing really is an up hill battle.

Hi Chris, I've got access to access logs, if that would help.

It appears to be .htaccess related. If I remove the .htaccess file from the WP directory my forum is accessible.

I've forgotten the timeline of what I was working on now (can't multitask very well!) but it's possibly related to this plugin that I've installed to get rid of a 404 problem: http://bbpress.org/forums/topic/strange-redirections-and-404s-after-wp-integration

Although when I deactivate this plugin it doesn't make any difference. Here's the htaccess file:

# BEGIN WordPress

I thought I'd jumped through all the hoops; I've managed to get everything integrated on the front end but when I go to access the forum admin section now I get a blank page.

Since being able to access the forum admin section I've changed
<?php bb_get_header(); ?>
to
<?php get_header(); ?>
in the bbPress theme files, moved
require_once('../wp-blog-header.php');
up to the top of my config file.

If I remove
require_once('../wp-blog-header.php');
from my config file I can access the admin section.

Hi, I've managed to integrate a fresh install of both WP and bbP successfully up to the point before integrating the WP header/theme.

Despite the overhead I'd like to use the method described at http://bbpress.org/documentation/integration-with-wordpress/ but when I use this method nothing happens; the forum remains looking the same.

I'm using a full URL address (i.e. http://) to call the blog header because a relative address doesn't appear to work and I can't seem to get the absolute address correct.

Any ideas?

How can I create a navigation bar in bbPress so that when I update it in Wordpress, it automatically gets updated in bbPress? I don't want to call the full wp header as the bbPress header, but would I be able to use

<?php wp_list_pages('sort_column=menu_order&title_li='); ?>

in bbPress to call the pages in the navigation bar? Both my WordPress and bbPress are integrated in the same databases. If not, how can I do it?

I think you should start a new topic.

If you deleted the WordPress database and your your bbPress installation was in the same database, then your bbPress installation is gone. You might restore from backup, but other than that you need to reinstall fresh.

How did you do that??

The
$bb->name
setting in config.php is the name for the whole site and the name you see in Admin > Content > Forum is the name of the categories or sub-forums (however you want to think about it - see the bottom of http://bbPress.org/forums/ for "Installation", "Troubleshooting", "Themes", etc - that is what you're changing in Admin > Content > Forums). Changing it there does indeed change the display (look at the bottom of the front page to see the name you are changing in the admin panel: it's under "Forums"). If it's not working like that in your installation, there's another problem I'm not familiar with.

Anyway, being able to change the site name in the admin panel might be a good suggestion. You can make feature requests at http://trac.bbpress.org .

Yup my forum title was too long and can be altered by editing the value in config.php - seems it should be editable on an Options tab like WP?

Guess what. Shortening the Forum name in Content > Forum doesn't change the actual forum name? Why is that?

It says "Home Interior Art Forums - Open Home Decor Discussions - *No Registration Needed!*" and I want to shorten it.

hmmm

OK, I think my forum name is too long and is covering it up actually.
You would see the login form but I see the admin and log out links cause I'm automatically logged in from my WP cookie -

this is lucky cause I have to manually go to the admin index and shorten the name of my forum...
