i got my pretty permalinks to work fine.... almost

One little glitch though. I cant access any of my forums directly. It renames all of the forum links to /forum.

the links look like this:
ex. http://www.djvibe.com/content/forums/forum/

which returns an error.

My htaccess looks like this.
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>

The rewritten links have zero to do with cookies. The rewrite rules are not working for you on GoDaddy (ed: was Dreamhost here). Have you browsed other people's experience by following that godaddy tag?

Thanks chrishaje, but I have tried the one line "Options +MultiViews" and the code from "/bb-admin/rewrite-rules.php" and a few others variations in the .htaccess, didn't make any difference. I just tired again, same result, doesn't work.

Can someone tell me if this sounds like a cookie problem?

Regarding permalinks, you will find lots of people expressing some problem with permalinks on GoDaddy. Just check the tag for other discussions.

That .htaccess would not work for the forum directory. That just looks like the WordPress rewrite rules changed slightly for your forum directory. You need to follow these directions:
http://bbpress.org/documentation/faq/#pretty-permalinks

I installed bbPress 0.9.0.2 and tried to integrate with WP 2.5 site. The two are at www.my-site/forum and www.mysite/blog under the root directory. I have two issues:

First is with permalinks set to the default (/forum.php?id=1), no problem, I can view profiles and posts within bbPress. However if I use either of the other settings for a permalink, when I click on any profile or post topic within admin control panel or site view, I only get a blank page, no error. Example: the post should be at “forum/post-name”, which is exactly where the link takes me but a blank page exists. However I can view the user profiles registered at bbPress within the WP admin area, so I believe the two are at least partially integrated.

The host is GoDaddy and there are no problems with WP permalinks. I have tried the using the following htaccess code with the /forum directory:

# BEGIN bbPress
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /forum/
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule . /forum/index.php [L]
</IfModule>

Also just having one line:
Options +MultiViews

Also the exact code generated at bb-admin/rewrite-rules.php

Second issue is after login to bbPress, a simple link to the WP admin requests me to login again. Does this take more than a simple link to “…/blog/wp-admin/”? I have checked the cookies and both look identical.

Thanks for any help

I will say that I've been with 1&1 Internet for 4 or 5 years now, and their hosting is OK, but if you ever have a problem, good luck trying to get help. Their support is abysmal. Hosting is fine when there are no problems, but when you have a problem (which you inevitably will), oh, the pain. I don't think they've ever resolved a problem for me, and I've taken to just not calling them and hoping problems resolve on their own. The people you talk to seem to have absolutely no ability to help you. The network engineers seem to keep on top of the problems and they end up fixing things on their own.

I suppose this is true with most cheap monthly hosts. They can't be that cheap and offer stellar support.

I would avoid GoDaddy and Dreamhost (for different reasons) but that's just my personal opinion. GoDaddy's management and customer service is horrific and Dreamhost's filesystem is the slowest I have ever seen on any host.

I do recommend for technical novices (maybe even intermediates) that you get a host with cpanel so it's easier to backup and move your entire setup at will.

I just now got this working! The solution is posted at http://bbpress.org/forums/topic/dropping-multiviews-support#post-16050

Quite simply, turn 1and1 hosting has MultiViews on by default and it must be turned off in .htaccess with:
Options -MultiViews

Then add the /bb-admin/rewrite-rules.php mod_rewrite AFTER the Options -MultiViews.

That was too simple to take this long to resolve.

Wait, so was this ever resolved after a year?
With WordPress in the root and bbPress in a sub-directory (ie. /forums/) can they both have pretty permalinks?

I have an idea if not - simple edit the webroot wordpress htaccess like so:

<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/forums/
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule . /index.php [L]
</IfModule>

where
/forums/
is the install path of bbpres underneath wordpress. Remember you still need the local htaccess for bbpress in it's own folder.

Also having a problem with pretty permalinks. i am on bluehost with the following:

wordpress 2.5.1 installed at example.com/blog
bbpress 0.9.0.2 installed at example.com/bb

i do have my wp akismet key applied in bbpress, but other than that no wp integration. bbpress works fine until i activate pretty permalinks. at that time, i can see all of my topics & stuff, but i just get 404 when i try to get to them.

here's an interesting thing i discovered: both installed to my site via SimpleScripts. WP works fine, but bb appears to have no .htaccess file at all. i do see one in attached to a theme, but that's it, and apparently not useful there.

since this seems to be the issue, sort of narrowed down, i created an .htaccess file using the code shown by jethro, but i know there's something missing. it didn't break my site, but i couldn't even get to admin area to see if i could make the permalinks work.

i'm not a programmer, but if anyone can tell me what code i need to have in the .htaccess file, i can make the file and upload it.

thanks!

Ok, I just realized that what worked for me only applied to a 'clean' top-level install, and what people are having issues with is installing bbpress in example.com/forums/, because example.com's .htaccess is over-riding example.com/forums/ 's .htaccess file.

So here's my example.com (permalinks work great):

<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule . /index.php [L]
</IfModule>

chmod: 644

And here's my example.com/forums .htaccess content:

<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /forum/
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteRule ^([^/]+)/(.*)?$ /forum/$1.php [PT,QSA]
</IfModule>

Any ideas?

Thanks

Just thought I'd post this as a service to others. I was having trouble installing bbPress on my website http://www.getfiterator.com which was hosted by GoDaddy.

You must change the line in the config.php file that says:

define('BBDB_HOST', 'localhost'); // 99% chance you won't need to change these last few

You must enter the correct hostname. You can find information about how to find the hostname for your database at the following link:

http://help.godaddy.com/article/39

Hope this saves someone some time ( it sure would have saved me some)!

Well I very much appreciate the donation (though unnecessary) but you've only half fixed your problem by disabling the pretty permalinks you used to have. I figured your priority was getting back online asap.

You need to check that your don't have any higher htaccess rules interfering with your bbpress htaccess, and that bbpress's htaccess rules are fresh and correct. Don't use multiviews in your htaccess on godaddy, make sure you go here and get the proper rules to copy into the /forums/.htaccess

http://www.eidolonai.com/forum/bb-admin/rewrite-rules.php

I also am concerned that you mention using the word "slug" (singular) in your bb-config.php when it should be
$bb->mod_rewrite = slugs;
(plural)

Yes, I saw that in the other post chrishajer (pay for help). Thanks so much for your help. I knew it had to be something simple.

Why would this have worked for so long then break after months of use?

How can I send you some cake? ;)

WoooHooo!!

Thanks _ck_! That worked sweet. Didn't even need to touch .htaccess.

I just donated $20 through your donate button. Sweet bbpress site by the way.

Thanks again so much.

Also, thanks for the offer, chrishajer, I really appreciate it.

For anyone who wants to know how to do that quickly, just go to your config.php file and make the following line of code look like this:
$bb->mod_rewrite = false;
(problem code was: $bb->mod_rewrite = slug;)

You said you were not using pretty permalinks, but you most definitely ARE using them.

This is a link to one of your topics:
http://www.eidolonai.com/forum/topic/62

If you were not using permalinks, the link would look like this:
http://www.eidolonai.com/forum/topic.php?id=62&page&replies=1#whatever-post-number-anchor (with some additional stuff at the end for replies and post number)

Try accessing this URL:
http://www.eidolonai.com/forum/topic.php?id=62

It gets rewritten to http://www.eidolonai.com/forum/topic/62 and that fails.

So, do you have mod_rewrite set to true in config.php? If so, turn it off until you can get rewrite rules in place that will work with GoDaddy.

By turn it off I mean

$bb->mod_rewrite = false;
(no quotes around false)
