Will it be possible to upgrade to 1.0 when there're people registering with utf8 usernames?
(I'm still testing and editing with 0.9, and will need utf8 names)
Or will it be better to use 1.0 alpha?

@ meitershaker

There was a bug in the display name implementation. First, update to the very latest trunk. There is a chance that you might have a user meta item for some users called 'display_name'. This will be stomping on the real setting in the user table. Use this SQL query to clear out the bad data.

DELETE FROM bb_usermeta WHERE meta_key = 'display_name';

Once you've updated to the latest trunk and done that, you should be able to use any UTF-8 character in display names.

Thanks for reply.
Me, I personally don't mind using alphabet for username, but have to think of target audience. Got me worried a bit. :)

I hope in the future version there's some sort of conversion mechanism for people that's already registered using utf-8 encoded username. (pretty please..)

@myu

It has to do with people using different character encoding for their database tables other than UTF-8. I'm probably overstating the threat as the same problem exists on all data input and we filter it out the problem there. I was also just reviewing WordPress injection attacks of days gone by, so it was on my mind.

In any case, the solution in the future is to change your display name after registration. Display names are UTF-8 friendly.

It should be noted that using non ascii characters in bbPress is not supported and you could open yourself to a whole range of potential SQL injection threats by doing so.

WordPress has never supported non-ascii characters in usernames and has compensated by allowing display names, bbPress 1.0 now allows display names as well for the same reason.

Thanks for your replies. After reading / testing your links, I found a quick working fix. Here's the plugin code :

<?php
/*
Plugin Name: UTF-8 usernames
Plugin URI:
Description: This plugin enable utf-8 characters in usernames. Mbstring must be enabled in the php.ini.
Author: Amir Habibi
Author URI: http://www.residence-mixte.com/
Version: 0.1
*/

function sanitize_user_mbstring( $raw_username, $username, $strict = false ) {
	$raw_username = $username;
	$username = strip_tags($username);
	// Kill octets
	$username = preg_replace('|%([a-fA-F0-9][a-fA-F0-9])|', '', $username);
	$username = preg_replace('/&.+?;/', '', $username); // Kill entities

	// Usage of 'mb_ereg_replace' instead of 'preg_replace' to preserve accents.
	if ( $strict )
 $username = mb_ereg_replace('|[^a-z0-9 _.\-@]|i', '', $username);

	return apply_filters('sanitize_user_mbstring', $username, $raw_username, $strict);

}

add_action('sanitize_user', 'sanitize_user_mbstring', 0, 3);
?>

To work, you must have mstring enabled in your php.ini.

Hope this will help !

Hello Everybody,

Firstly, thank you all for those great free Blog and Forum you created. It's just wonderfull, kinda think that it just couldnt be more what I was looking forward for.

During the installation I had the "mysql->i<-_get_server_info()" problem and followings that I could fix easily with the #745 patch.

But, this would have been such a beautifull story ... ;P Has the DB error disapeared, all my Japanese texts transformed to "日本語". Before the #745 patch, I am sure it was working (actually that was the first thing I checked after having it installed cause all my forum is gonna be in Japanese).

I have to mention that I only installed the genuine thing, I did not install any pluging for Japanese or such.

Could you be so kind to help me fixing this character problem please?

I have changed the encoding in my database, from latin 1 to utf8, and everything is ok except for the display of the usernames set in wordpress "display name" and brougt in to bbpress with the "use dispaly name"-plugin. When I use special characters like swedish å, ä or ö, or e.g. é, they show up like .
I notice that in the bbpress database, special characters that I use in posts are stored with what I think is utf8 in the DB (e.i. they look strange), but/and they all look ok when displayed in the forum. Names in the wp_users "display_name" however are stored with the latin character but show up wrong.

The conversion was made following this manual: http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/06/23/how-to-convert-character-set-and-collation-of-wordpress-database/

Hi, I'm having problems with the character encoding on a WP/BBpress integrated site. In WP, I can tell the system to encode the page in ISO-8859-1 (which is necessary in this case), in bbpress I don't know how. I declare the doctype and the meta-content-charset in the theme's header, but as opposed to the WP pages, the bbpress generated ones are encoded as UTF-8. Looking at the page properties in Firefox, I can see "encoding: UTF-8" and "meta information... charset:ISO-8859-1".

Can someone help, please? Thanks in advance!

I have bbpress and wordpress running independently on the same domain but am having some encoding problems with bbpress that I didnt have on my local server.

As an example . . .

the…?

Shows as . . .

the…?

I am sharing some of the same header information between my bbpress install and my wp theme, but I don't know enough about encoding to know if that's the problem.

Thanks,
