I'm a bit confused to if bbpress will be compatible with wordpress 2.6, will it be? And can you guesstimate when we might see something?

I'd love to be able to use bbpress but I'm running 2.6 so may have to look for something else, not sure if there are any good alternatives?

I wrote my own replacement plugin for the mail function that uses the Swift Mailer PHP class to call sendmail directly, which should provide better performance over the built-in php mail functions.

It also gives the the chance to assign a display name to the email address so it comes through as "bbPress Support Forum" instead of just "forum@bbpress.org".

if ( !function_exists('bb_mail') ) {
function bb_mail($to, $subject, $content, $headers=''){

        require_once('PATH_TO/Swift/lib/Swift.php');
        require_once('PATH_TO/Swift/lib/Swift/Connection/Sendmail.php');

        $swift =& new Swift(new Swift_Connection_Sendmail("/usr/sbin/sendmail -bs"));
        $from = new Swift_Address("noreply@mysite.com","My bbPress Forums");

        $message =& new Swift_Message($subject, $content);
        if ($swift->send($message, $to, $from)) {return true;}
        else{ echo "Message failed to send to ".$to." from ".$from;}
        $swift->disconnect();
   }
}

To use this, you'd have to download Swift from their site and put it where it's included in the above code.
http://www.swiftmailer.org/

You could also modify it to connect to an external SMTP server (even the Gmail server, for instance) by changing the Swift_Connection part above using this guide:
http://www.swiftmailer.org/wikidocs/v3/connections/smtp

bbPress 0.9 renamed the critical system email address that several plugins rely on ("admin_email" became "from_email")

Unfortunately many plugin authors aren't aware of this and the old setting is completely deleted from the database, which makes any older plugin that looks for "admin_email" fail and get a blank address and don't anticipate/test for a blank. So they blindly insert the blank address into emails which causes the emailer to either fail or bounce the message.

A few of my plugins were affected, I just found another tonight, and there are several third-party ones still unpatched.

You can work around this problem by putting this into your
bb-config.php
(anywhere on a new line)

$bb->admin_email = 'email@your-forum.com';

where
email@your-forum.com
is the same email address you use inside bbPress on
bb-admin/options-general.php

This won't hurt anything, causes no extra load of any kind and simply allows older plugins to work without additional edits until the authors get a chance to upgrade them.

(Just remember you "hard coded" this address if you ever change the main one for any reason. You can delete it after 1.0 is out and all plugins have upgraded. In fact the old email address will become unused after all the plugin upgrade anyway so this can't hurt anything in practice.)

Hello,
'Admin Add Users' plugin (I'm using latest 1.2) doesn't work. When you are in the administrator window and edit a profile created using the plugin, it takes you to your keymaster account.

The problem is the new version of bbpress now populates 'nicename' field whereas the old one doesn't, and so this plugin doesn't either. Adding a 'nicename' fixes the problem.

However, while you can login using the new user I don't understand how because it uses md5 for the password, and I thought 0.9 now uses a different encryption system?

I imagine there are some other serious problems that you should really disable this plugin until it is fixed.

One is that it uses direct sql to add the user, which may not be compatible with 0.9...
Hope this helps.

All of my plugins are 0.9 compatible - if not, I will make them so, just give me a bug report. You should always be using the newest version of my plugins BEFORE you upgrade.

Virtually all of them tested working under the current beta. "Admin Instant Menus" may stop working if the WP menu system is folded into bbPress before release.

"Year Long Cookies" should not really be necessary any more because of the new 0.9 "Remember Me" option on login, unless perhaps one has a forum on an intranet and you don't want to bother people with logins, ever.

Hi, I'll be working on my bbpress stuff again later in October but thanks for figuring this out. I wouldn't normally test it with the support forum plugin so I wasn't aware of that behavior.

Not sure why My Views is trashing the support forum views but I'll investigate further sometime soon - it might have to do with the way My Views lets you re-order the views, though it should not delete any.

(you're using v0.08 correct?)

I have both the My Views and Support Forums plugins installed. They work well together except for 1 thing. Both plugins add a new filter to bb_views.

If both plugins are running the new views from My Views are the only ones to show up. The Support Forums views are not listed. After poking through the code I was able to fix it by making sure that the Support Forums bb_views filter was added AFTER the My Views bb_views filter. To do so edit support-forum.php .

Replace line 432
--------------------------------

add_filter('bb_views', array(&$this, 'addViews'));

--------------------------------

With
--------------------------------

add_filter('bb_views', array(&$this, 'addViews'), 200);

--------------------------------

You should now be able to see the views from both plugins.

I'm no expert, but it seems like when My Views is adding my_views_init to the bb_views filter its overwriting whatever Support Forums has already added to the filter. Just a guess. I'm sure ck, so1o, mdawaffe, or SamBauers will know exactly what is going on.

Enjoy!

1) I would 't worry about the plugins to help out if you need it (small percentage) as they are intended to get it fixed which will eventually make it into the core. Those plugins would only require minor changes if something was changed in bbPress, but I doubt it would happen often.

2) I had great luck with the phpbb converter myself and have stated in one of the threads which one I used. I would just look around a bit before choosing one.

3) Since the upgrade process is so easy, there is no need to wait! As well, the changes scheduled for the next series of releases are small changes and no worth waiting for!

4) So1o just released a new version of the private forums plugin that is exceptional and recently addressed the problems with the RSS feed being private. It is found in the 'extend' tab of this forum in the plugin browser!

5) fel64 is absolutely right. mdawaffe is the head dev and he is working on wordpress code at the same time. They will always be compatible as they are working toward more shared function (at least not conflicting). Issues will be worked out as we go, but shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks,

Trent

1. Some dudes do, yeah. But it seems to be a minority; who can tell? Maybe bbPress does just have a few new users a week :P
2. Haven't seen one. Believe there was some trouble with older converters somebody dug up.
3. New version is in development, and I expect there will be new versions in development for a while. Don't let that stop you getting it now. There's no release planned for the next week as far as I know.
4. It's not in the core and there's no indication that's what's being worked on right now. It'd have to be a plugin. Last I read they fixed their RSS problems? It will say in the plugin topic, anyway.
5. It's one of the wp devs that's developing bb at the moment. They all work for the same small company. I don't think one release would ever break the other.

I just set up a bbpress forum and use the WP user database. It works well though plugins are needed and some hackery of bb-config is required (see here.

I use the private forums plugin. There is another plugin that blocks all access to the site. You could always make ma minor mod to bbpress source to force login and not rely on a plugin.

I've seen some discussion on WP about BBpress. I believe they changed the way they handle tags in order to not step on bbpress.

I've monitored bbPress for some time and plan to use WP for a big site and would need to convert a phpBB(2) forum over to bbPress. What's the latest on:

1) WP integration - last I heard you had to fiddle with cookie settings and some usernames wouldn't work on the forum login. I'd be wary of using plugins as this could cause problems upgrading in future.

2) phpBB(2) conversion - is there any script that will convert everything perfectly?

3) future plans - is there a new version in development or is everything on hold for now? (i.e. should I just go and install the current version or wait another month or two)

4) private forums - an essential feature for me is to have a staff board that is 100% secure. Again I didn't really want to rely on a plugin for this and last time I think I read it wasn't secure because of an RSS problem.

5) lastly - is bbPress compatibility high on the list when new versions of WordPress are released? (i.e. could a new WP break by forum?)

Cheers.
