Those settings are wrong. The charset and collation should match what your DB actually is.

I've solved the problem, by defining charset as latin1_swedish_ci and collate as utf8, even though I would been it should have been the other way around - or am I wrong?

Nope, it's not shared or anything.. but it seems like being a problem between what character set of data bbPress thinks it getting and what it actually get. I'll try working on it, and see what happends..

Are you using a shared DB with WordPress and, if so, did you happen to use Fantastico or some other installer app to install it?

I've seen that (latin1_swedish_ci) borking recently with a weird WP install, but not with BBPress.

Hi,

I've just tested an upgrade of my bbPress 0.8.2.1 forum. The upgrade goes to bbPress 0.9.0.4, but after the upgrade has finished and the upgrade/installation script has asked, and been given permission, to upgrade the database, it seems like theres some problems with special characters. The forum is in danish, and therefore æ, ø and å is very common, but after the upgrade they just show up as their respective UTF8 codes. I can't figure out, and but the header and my browser is set to UTF8.

I can tell, that the forum was and still are in UTF8, but the collation on the database tables is latin1_swedish_ci

Anyone with an idea of the problem?

You don't normally need to set anything there. The installation will continue fine without it.

Every MySQL database uses character collation, but it's normally hidden from sight. For my bbPress installation, the collation is
utf8_general_ci
. But I didn't have to set it, it's already there. In a unique situation you might need to set it, but I've never messed with it.

I'm in the middle of installing this, but I need the "database character collation"

What is that and where do I find it?

I created the database before installation, but I never heard of the "character collation value" and I've installed a lot of scripts.

I use cpanel if that makes a difference.

Hi,
I have installed bbPress on local servers (MAMP / Apache that came with mac) and these installations made database tables with collation of "utf8_general_ci"

Installed on online server, and this one made database tables with collation of "latin1_swedish_ci"

Why?
And more importantly, does it matter?

Either way, a lot of entries are not going to be in English, so anything in db isn't human-readable, so if it doesn't matter, it doesn't matter, I guess.
Though, if there is any way to be able to read non-ascii stuffs in database, I would love to know, please...

Thanks.

The word "swedish" is in there only because MySQL was originally a Swedish product and it's legacy. Has nothing to do with any local language settings - just means it's at the default.

Perhaps a database upgrade failed at some point and left it at a weird miss-match?

Sounds like the collation on some tables or fields in the database don't match some others. I think they should all be the same. If you log in with phpMyAdmin, you should be able to check what the database collation is, then make all the tables and fields the same.

This is only a guess though, but if it were my forum and my error, that's what I would do.

Maybe the database you used for WordPress has a different collation, but WordPress didn't care about the difference where bbPress does care and gives you an error?

Do you have access to the database with something like phpMyAdmin?

Can you post the database section of your bb-config.php here (the first 15 or so lines). Turn anything sensitive, like the password, into ********.

I have the latest MySQL, or, my host company, at least, does. They're very good that way. I've tried the above fixes, and nothing works. I've adjusted nothing in my config file.

Also, I'm not Swedish, so I'm not sure why anything needs to be Swedish...

I imagine you have this set in your bb-config.php:

define('BBDB_COLLATE', 'utf8_general_ci');

.
When it should be (in your case):

define('BBDB_COLLATE', 'latin1_swedish_ci');

I have no idea what that is, but I can try and help until someone more knowledgeable comes along.

Did you set any of these three lines to something different than the default in your bb-config.php:

define('BBDB_CHARSET', 'utf8');
define('BBDB_COLLATE', '');
define('BB_LANG', '');

I found this online:
http://www.datutorials.com/mysql/mysql_ref_manual_Charset.php

What is your MySQL version?

Hi fel64,

I removed the gengo plugin from wp and things are back to normal. I noticed in phpmyadmin collation for database between bb and wp doesn;t match and I'm guessing it's partly responsible for my woes.

Collation for wp is utf-8 while bb is latin1_swedish_ci. But I'm not sure how to change this.

I need to check if gengo is supported in bb.
