Hi Anointed and AWJunkies, is there any update on the issues with the phpBB conversion that many users on this thread have highlighted?

Right now, I'm stuck in no-man's land and would love to get a resolution of sorts.

If there is no further support or development into this plugin, then please let us know so that users like me can look at other solutions for our forum boards.

I appreciate all the work that has gone into this, but as it is, its not complete and not usable to anyone.

If anyone has successfully converted their phpBB board to bbPress using this converter, I'd like to hear from them.

Thank you in advance for any replies and help!

This is important info and should really also be included in description
where it still says "We are working on phpBB"

What does this in the description mean:
"This plugin runs in the background and converts passwords for your users when they log in, so the process is seamless even if your old forum uses different encryption methods."
Does this mean that I should not uninstall the plugin after the conversion is complete?

This is a question between Buddypress and WordPress, however I decided to post it also here, because I'm not too sure whether I should use BBPress or Buddypress in my setup and maybe someone could give me some advice here.

I’m working at a wordpress project that is structured as follows in a multisite configuration:

1) main site, single language, heavily customized with post types, loads of content, no forum, one webshop
2) secondary site, simpler setup, relatively little content, no forum, no webshop, multilanguage (WPML)
3) third site hosting a forum only and no other content; forum interface will be multilanguage (like site #2)
4) fourth site, reserved to admins only, single language, possibly a forum, to manage content and carry on project management tasks and discussions, etc.

- all sites would be in the same domain (ie http://www.domain.com/ = 1, http://www.domain.com/2, http://www.domain.com/3 etc)

- sites #1, #2, #3 would be seamlessly integrated in the frontend. However content displayed changes, since #1 has very different contents meant for users in the main language, while #3 is just a forum. Site #2 is intended to provide information and basic contents to international users, while the forum would provide a common space for discussion, being the interface translated.

I want a multisite setup so users can keep their logins, cookies, across the sites, yet at the same time make some order to admin the different areas.

Now… it is clear to me that WPML I can take care of the translation part. However, what I’m really clueless about is how to seamlessly integrate the forum part. Since mine is a community-type website, I want to have community features… Buddypress seems to offer a more complete solution for this than bare bbpress. I don’t want users to create their blogs or groups. But it would be nice to have better profile pages, private messaging, set their own display pic, and so on. Features that bbpress lacks or are not natively integrated (I come from a bbpress 1.0 experience and while I love it for the theming possibilities, plugin wise was badly supported).

So what I would really like to know… Does it make sense to run BuddyPress on site #3, activate only modules for member profiles, forums and activity streams?

Will the activity streams report activity of these users on sites #1 and #2? (would that include creation of new articles, posts and content by admins and authors? or just comments?)

Will the users be able to login from site #1 or #2 or #3 and kept logged in without any weirdness happening when navigating through the sites and performing actions?

Can authors from #1 and #2 link their profiles to profiles found in #3 Buddypress rather than using author.php? Same for registered users that post a comment on #1 or #2, can they have a link directing to their Buddypress member profile page/activity stream?

Being site #1 only in one language for both content and interface, what if user jumps from #2 or #3 to #1 and then back to #2 or #3, would his languages preference being persistent?

Thank you!

Ben, I've had more success with the 2.1 development version, available as a zip at the bottom of http://bbpress.trac.wordpress.org/browser/branches/plugin.

All I have done is create a bbpress directory within my theme folder and in there copied in any files from plugins\bbpress\bbp-themes\bbp-twentyten\bbpress that I wanted to modify. I have not moved any files out of the plugins directory.

I haven't had much success with setting the css for bbpress from within my theme. In the end I ended up renaming plugins\bbpress\bbp-themes\bbp-twentyten\css\bbpress.css to bbpress_master.css and creating a new bbpress.css in the same folder. Within this new file I have my modifications with the following as the first lines

/**
* bbPress specific CSS
*
* @package bbPress
* @subpackage Theme
*/

/* =bbPress Style
-------------------------------------------------------------- */

@import url("bbpress_master.css");

I will need to be careful updating bbpress as I will lose my bbpress.css. Until I work out how to have css working through my theme it will do.

Hmm... just found this:

<i>"If you are the author of this theme, then you can copy all the files *out of* the "/bbpress/bbp-themes/bbp-twentyten" folder into the folder of your theme, and make your own edits from there.
So is the best approach for me to copy the bbPress folder within bbp-twentyten into my theme, and add whatever forum or snippets or files I need to my theme files?

Here's what I tried:

1) Copy bbpress theme folder into my theme
2) add "add_theme_support( 'bbpress' );" to my functions file

Nothing. I think I misunderstand how the bbpress theming system works. I thought it was more or less a "child theme" that bolts on to twentyten.

Are there files or snippets of code I need to grab from the bbp-twentyten theme?

FWIW, the site is running Buddypress, along side bbpress. I'm using the stock Buddypress theme, and my own Buddypress child theme.

Everything is working perfectly (forum is up and running, etc). All I'm trying to do is used a customized bbpress template so I have complete control over the forum markup.

Thanks!

ok, very sad though.

I was hoping that community support would be ramping up by now, with people releasing such converters etc. But it seems not to be the case.

I will just have to look to an alternative (vanilla?), as I can't afford to pay for a conversion. Additionally, its not a good 'entry' into a new system - having to pay your way in. Doesn't give the impression of a thriving support system.

Maybe I don't fully understand the technical aspects, but if you guys can do a punbb>bbpress manual conversion, how difficult is it to convert those steps into a script for your future users?

Cheers,

This will happen automatically in the next release of both. If your code above literally returns "nothing" then it isn't even being executed, since you should at least see feedback about there being no topics. If you do at least see that feedback, then the problem lies in bbp_get_user_topics_started(). Check out how it works and see if there is anything broken.

Worst case scenario, you can call your own WP_Query loop and display them yourself.

You can always override the default twentyten bbPress (core) theme using CSS, for most elements or their attributes.

However, to override the default markup, it would most likely require you to use an action or filter in your wp theme (or child theme) functions.php, or to modify the core plugin theme files (being aware of the fact that you would then have to protect these in the event of any plugin update). See this for a list of some 110 action hooks: https://gist.github.com/1372637

You could use body.bbPress xxxx {element:attribute;} in your css to help you restrict your css mods to only bbPress pages. I believe you can also use many bbPress specific conditional tags as well.

Unfortunately you can't do that...bbpress doesn't work with the native wp template, or child, it only works "within" the template structure (think of it like an insert that goes into the content area of the wp template).

As a result, just make a regular page with your wp theme, and add shortcode to the post editor. If you want you can style the wp template for header and footer and sidebar and width, etc., but not to add the short codes for bbpress :-)

This seemed like a brilliant solution, but I'm sure I'm doing something wrong.

I already had a "forums" page, with the short code in place. The page slug is "forums."

So, I figured I would make a template called page-forums.php, thinking that WordPress's template hierarchy would take over... no such luck.

I will watch the vid when I get off the train. I'm sure the answer appears within the first 30 seconds...

Undoubtedly, your easiest way to go is to use shortcodes for this purpose. You simply create a new page for each view (like forum-view), then add the shortcode you prefer to the page via the post editor. In this case a forum view is easy and uses "bbp-forum-index" (within short code brackets...remove the quotes). Here is a list of shortcodes to start: http://bbpress.org/forums/topic/bbpress-20-shortcodes

@OC2PS
1. Yes
2. Yes
3. Yes, uses the WordPress/bbPress permalink setup, so whatever you use for that, is what is used for the conversion.
4. nope 301's are your job
5. Username/password and I think a couple other fields are imported, don't remember exactly. If you are looking for full blown imports, which is different for each installation as you have different plugins installed than I do... then that would be a custom import job which AWJunkies does provide services for. Check the http://bbconverter.com site and send in a custom quote request.

@ED
No idea. Frankly the interest in converting things has been much less than we anticipated. I have no idea what AWJunkies plans are at this point. I do know he does provide custom import services if you need it.

So I'm running bbPress 2.0 alongside Buddypress 1.5. I'm using a child theme, based on Buddypress's default theme... but I want to tweak some bbPress pages.

Let's say, for example, the main forum view.

Right now, it's based off page.php in my child theme, and is taking the title of the last forum, and using that in the the_title() tag I have for the page title.

On other "pages" I this makes sense; it's getting the title while in the loop.

For the bbPress forum page, it's wonky.

So, I want to make a main forum-view specific template file... but I'm unsure as to the best approach when I'm running a child theme for Buddypress.

FWIW, all forum's are being handled by bbPress and it's default template files.

Thanks!
