Akismet automatically marks a newly registered user as a bozo if it gets a spam response to some of the user's profile fields. Bozo status simply marks new posts from the user as spam. A post can be marked as spam by Akismet without the user being a bozo.

That post was three years ago, so I'm not sure to what I was actually referring.

I don't use Akismet any more, so I'm not sure how it works with bozo. I know you can manually make someone a bozo, but never really got into how someone becomes a bozo or spammer automatically.

I am not sure what plugins are running here, but Akismet is for sure. When a post gets caught as spam, I can release it without having anything to do with bozo status, as far as I know. Maybe it's automatic, or maybe the bozo plugin is not active here. But if a single post is caught as spam, I can just "unspam" it and it becomes visible again. I've never done anything with member status at all.

Hopefully someone with more experience moderating using both Akismet and bozo will come along.

Thanks Chris. There is one place I see akismet hooked up to the bozo plugin. When the Akismet service comes back with a positive then it checks that the bozo plugin is installed and if so sets that user to a bozo.

if ( 'true' == $response[1] && function_exists( 'bb_bozon' ) ) {
bb_bozon( bb_get_current_user_info( 'id' ) );
}

I thought this was the ONLY current way (aside from other plugins) that a user automatically becomes a bozo. Is that correct?

I have used the bozo plugin to manually deal with spammers. As far as I know it just makes their posts visible to them but invisible to everyone else. Simple but effective.

I HAVE had problems when using akismet, so I thought the issues were more on the akisment side than the bozo side. Were the problems you mention in that post happening without akismet active?

I'm trying to understand the bozo plugin and how it interacts with akismet. Looking through the code I can get a pretty good idea, but I'm worried I'll miss some subtlety. Is there a decent English (as opposed to PHP) description of the goals/operation of either or both of these plugins anywhere?

One specific question: the bozo plugin's "bb_bozon" function that flips the bozo bit for a user also takes a topic_id argument. It looks like the intention here is to have per-topic bozos. Akismet doesn't seem to use this feature though. Am I reading this right, or is it for something else?

The context for this is that I want to allow a certain class of moderator-like users on our forum to mark posts as spam. When they do so the following will happen:

- the poster will be marked as bozo (using bb_bozon)
- all topics by that poster will get topic_status=2 (using bb_topic_delete)
- all remaining posts by that poster will get post_status=2 (using bb_post_delete)
- admin will get a notification

Admin will then have an option to reverse all of this. Sound reasonable?

Finally, if there is a plugin that already does something very similar, I'd love to hear about it. I have looked, but while there are some cool plugins out there they either do more than I need, or don't have exactly the right functionality.

Akismet comes and goes in terms of quality: it's usually fairly reliable, but then it will freak out for a week or two and produce lots of false positives. That's why I've come up with so many ways to route around it...

I still find it useful, but Akismet probably shouldn't be checking posts by Admins or users with lots of posts already in the system... that's just begging for problems! :-)

Not sure about her being hit with Bozo. But after looking up the link you provided, that could be the culprit. But if it is, why would the system go and label a user as spam? Especially when the user has never made any kind of spam content.

I don't see much point in Akismet considering lately its been spamming non-spam then spam. But would there be any repercussions of turning the system off? And maybe if there is something more "suitable" that can replace the spam system?

http://bbpress.org/forums/tags/bozo

You can also use this plugin to allow certain users to "skip akismet":
http://bbpress.org/plugins/topic/skip-akismet/

("You can also use the profile checkbox for ignoring "throttle limit" to specifiy skipping for individual users." <-- that's the key line)

I have found Akismet to be a decent failsafe for spam, but it's not really suitable for use as the primary spam catcher for a message board! I've had great results using plugins that allow long-time members to skip the akismet process entirely...

I'm a moderator on a forum and lately one of our longtime users who's never been spammed once by Askimet has been getting spammed like "automatically". It doesn't matter if she posts, she gets spammed. There are no words or links that would lead her to get spammed.

Also Askimet tends to spam non-spam threads and posts. Which we normally just unspam but having a user being constantly spammed is irritating. I understand this might be confusing, as its confusing to us too. The administrator has done just about everything he can do.

This hasn't happened to anyone else. But we do fear that it might later on. I guess askimet views her as a spambot when she isnt. She has been registered for nearly two years and has never once really been in trouble with the rules.

If you change the page 6 to a page 7 in the address bar, your post comes up. It looks like an issue with pagination. The front page and the topic page showed only 6 pages, but there were actually 7 pages and yours (and another, and now two others) were on page 7.

So what plugins do you have that would affect pagination? Anything that would hide posts for any reason? Looks like bbPress is counting up enough posts to show that there are 6 pages, but there are really 7. I suspect the post count is wrong on the front page too (it said 180, but there were probably more like 180, assuming 30 per page.)

What version of bbPress? And what plugins?

the bug has happened again!
If you are quick to check my forum out now, you can see for yourself.

Go to http://www.michaeljackson.no/forum and see the top discussion "Velkommen til nytt forum". There are six pages, where I - Marius have the last reply. But when clicking on number "6", you don't see my last reply at all. You see user "eps" reply instead, mine is not showing at all, anywhere in the topic. It has not appeared yet.
