There is no performance difference as far as I know if you use the same key for all your sites. You start hitting restrictions when your total volume gets too high, in which case you might opt for the commercial Akismet license instead.

WordPress.com says this about the keys:

"Please use your own API Key and don’t ever share your API it is like a password for you =)"

I don't know about advantages or disadvantages for using the same key. I used to use the same key for all sites, but now I get a new key for each site (which is a big pain). I haven't noticed a performance difference one way or the other.

re: Akismet Keys.

So i have several sites I'm working with that use blog plugins and i was wondering if anyone knows more about the key.

I've been using the same API key for all my sites, but is there any advantage or disadvantage to using the same key for mulitple sites... different keys for different clients sites?

Does it matter if i just use the same key for everything?

thanks, - Aaron - I'm sure other's would like to know too!

I also have a user whose posts are getting caught by akismet because she posted too many links. I have installed _ck_'s human test plaugin (thanks!) and plan to disable akismet.

But is this user now listed as a spammer for akismet in general? That is, will her comments be blocked at other akismet-enabled sites?

If so, how do I restore her "good name"?

I would disable akismet too. I don't know of a way to whitelist a user.

Is she posting more than 3 links per post? I think that's one of the triggers. Since they don't publish what triggers someone to get caught as spam, it's hard to say exactly what triggers it. But posting a lot of links certainly will cause you to be marked as a spammer by Akismet.

Make sure they have not been flagged as a "bozo" by looking at their profile.

In bbpress 0.9 you can disable the built-in bozo plugin entirely which I actually recommend as it's more trouble than it's worth.

(Then use my Human Test plugin to make sure you don't get bots registering to post spam).

There is no plugin for Akismet - it's already included with bbPress. All you need to do is add your Akismet key to your config.php to use it That's all.

I think this will be changing in the future, but for current releases, it's built in.

Your advice please.
I have no knowledge of php, but some html and css. I managed to set up the forum and it works fine, but when it comes to Akismet I have a problem.
I have placed it in the plugin folder. When I go to Site Management to activate it, I have the warning "Plugin could not be activated; it produced a Fatal Error."
I have three other plugins which I have deactivated and still the same message.
The API number has been placed on the config file as required.
It is not integrated with WP.

Any suggestions?

Put this in a plugin file named '_addSuperuser.php' in the my-plugins directory:

function addSuperuserToArray($array)
{
     $array[] = 'Superuser';
     return $array;

add_filter('bb_trusted_roles', 'addSuperuserToArray');

.
If there is no my-plugins directory in the bbPress root, just create it. The underscore at the start of the file name should make the file autoload, so it is available without activation in the admin area.

I ran into a similar problem. Specifically, I created a new Role called 'Superuser' that has capabilities between Member and Moderator. I don't want these users ever to be spam-filtered.

I solved this by replacing this function in /bb-includes/functions.php:

function bb_trusted_roles() {

return apply_filters( 'bb_trusted_roles', array('moderator', 'administrator', 'keymaster') );

}

with this:

function bb_trusted_roles() {

return apply_filters( 'bb_trusted_roles', array('moderator', 'administrator', 'keymaster', 'Superuser') );

}

This works, but I hate hacking the core. Is there a way to do this with a plugin? I tried and tried, but I couldn't figure out how to array_push a new Role on that array. Can somebody help me, perhaps with their superior understanding of how add_filter works? :-)

Thanks!

Hi guys.

I haven't been running bbPress long, but I've had this one problem with Akismet so far, that freaked me out. In that I have no idea why it happens.

I had a user last night sign up, go straight to a thread where users post their myspace pages, and post his. And bam, Akismet said spam, and bbpress said "bozo".

Every subsequent post by this guy was held back as spam. I finally had the presence of mind to edit his profile and saw he was marked as a bozo. I changed the 1 to 0, thinking naturally that it was a logical flag, which indeed it is, but still every new post by this guy was getting marked as spam. I went into mysql and queried bb_usermeta with his user_id, and saw there was an is_bozo = 0 in there. I deleted that row, but still, all new posts by him were getting marked as spam. And the bozo thing wasn't returning.

Eventually I disabled Akismet. Now, naturally, there are no posts getting marked as spam. But I had to re-enable Akismet because there were still a couple of posts I hadn't marked as "not spam", and when Akismet isn't installed, you can't mark things as spam/not spam.

I'm running my forum with a few people (around 10) in it at the moment, just to test it out before I start advertising it more. So it's not a huge problem, but the point is it really freaked me out that this could happen on a daily basis to alot of users if I had Akismet turned on and a bunch of new registrations.

Anyone have any ideas?

RonJRoy, bbPress and Wordpress are not really related, and a wordpress.com login is necessary just for the Akismet key. The login for bbPress does not work at wordpress.com.

One thing I always thought was weird though is that the wordpress.com login works for trac.bbpress.org.

Good day,
Is my bbpress username and password the ticket to get the Akismet id? If so, is worpress.com the site I go to? Tried it and could find nothing. Find it frustrating to have to ask for answers that should not be made so hard to find. I'm sure more difficult situations lie ahead! Thanks...RJ

Once you have a wordpress.com username and password, you log in at wordpress.com and there is spot to retrieve your key. Wordpress.com looks all different to me today, but the key is stored in there somewhere. Just look around.

Once you have that, enter it in your config.php and start blocking spam.

Yes, how does one receive the Akismet key id. I downloaded the file and read that one would be emailed upon registration. Is this correct, or is a step missed on my part?

Akismet will not work if you don't have a value between the '' in the akismet portion of the config.php. If you don't have a valid key (as fel64 mentioned), it does the same thing.

Yes. Do not supply a valid Akismet key.

I would like to stop using Akismet in bbPress only and keep it running for my WordPress blog. The reason is only registered authors of the blog can access bbPress and hence there is no need to check spam from them. What Akismet ends up doing is blocking sometimes authors' messages in bbPress.

Is there a simple way to do this without upsetting Akismet in my WordPress blog?
